smells of raw fuel at idle

00 vmax 700, can't get rid of raw fuel smell at idle. has 18 k on motor re-ringed this fall new stator, and new set of boysen reeds. idle screws are at 1 1/4 turn out. stock jets head gasket mod stock pipe and muffler mod done. just seems to smell of raw fuel at idle. Floats seem to be good and i can't get rid of this problem. Plugs look spot on but yet can't figure this one out. Any ideas would be great. The needle slides have also been changed to one size under stock so therefore should actually lean things out slightly as well.

is the smell from the exhaust or just from the engine bay. If you mean 1 size smaller or shorter needles, that will actuall richen it up. smaller needle = more fuel flow, maybe the needles aren't closing the main jets off all the way.

Not sure if your '00 SX is similar to my '01 and other's SRX, but at the upper left side (drivers side) corner of the tank is the tank vent. It has a 90 degree elbow with a tappered fit that presses into a flanged hole screwed to the tank.

I found mine had popped out a few years ago and others had thiers come out this year. It appears the vent hose can side load it and force it out. Usually a strong smell after a fill up is the first sign.

I applied green loctite and tapped it in.

Something to look for since you've been into it lately and may have moved the vent line in the process.

Needles are stock, the brass body they slide in wears over time and opens up the hole thus causing crappy fuel milage. The smell seems to be from the exhaust but i will go check the vent.

sorry the brass body is the needle jet i just looked it up to find the proper name out of the book. so the needle jet is one size smaller than stock the needle is stock. I just checked and the vent is just fine.

Just a thought, try tightening the phillips screws on the pump. I had some gas coming from somewhere the first couple rides this year. I checked the lines (they were replaced last year at the beginning of the season) but they were OK, but around the pump looked wet, I tried tightening up the screws on the pump and they were all loose. I don't know how they got loose, but everything is fine now.

I will try that as well. so here's what i have done so far. Looked at floats again they looked as tho they could use a little closer adjustment so i did that. then i read the paper for boysen reeds again. It says that the boysen reeds lean out on idle so i re-adjusted the pilot screws. I think they were in to far so it didn't want to idle cause of the lack of fuel. so therefore i turned in the idle screw to make it idle but it won't idle well cause the idle screw uses main jet and isn't a good control for idle mixture.
