first ride around the field with the viper with the venom kit and heads installed. it is literally a new machine. not to loud, not to quiet. i absolutey love it. the clutching seems to be pretty good right out of the box. it pulls like my 800r. and i absolutely love the sound of those pipes it's quieter than my buddy's rumble packed viper with a way better sound. the only problem is i built it with thoughts of ice racers in my head so the .725 track isn't hooking up too well with the foot of snow we've got on the river after snowmageddon. i guess i'll just save the .920 ice picks i've got for next winter. i'm wishing i would have left the 136x1.5 paddle on it.

SWEET!!! Just bought some SLP pipes hope i like them!!

Yeah, back when I went from my stock viper, to the venom kit, I was amazed at the difference as well. Those aaen pipes are the best sounding pipes on a viper IMO. Not too quiet and not too loud. Just right.

Skydog, you will LOVE your SLP pipes. I noticed a difference going from the aaens to SLP's. If your going from stock to SLP's, the difference is huge!!

jetted it as you advised a while ago, mopar1rules. thanks for the help, it seems to be spot on. and i agree about the sound, i love it.

BigTimeFarmer, which clutch kit did you use? Did you have the head redone or just the gasket? Did you do anything to the secondary clutch?

I just bought a used set of SLP pipes for my Viper and a HeelClicker clutch kit. Just curious of others setup to compare with.

How much stronger are the SLP's vs. the Aaen's? Have you done a comparison? How about mileage or finicky traits with jetting on either set?

i got a set of hauck's venom heads and their stage 3 clutch kit. the clutch kit wasn't worth it in hindsight as it only included a straight 70 deg. helix(same as stock) both springs and their adjustable weights which are basicly the same profile as the stock 8ek's. the springs and rivets in their stage one kit probly would've got me by. it also came with thier overdrive sheave which i have not installed yet but have not read anything positive on this site about it.

Stock is a 47 deg. helix. Yes, I have not cared for Hauck's so called clutch kits for some time. I have been there and done it with them. You'd be better off using the stock weights and tuning those or use Dalton or Heavy Hitters IMO. Ditto on the overdrive.......done that too. I gained top end and lost ET when I tried it. So yes I saw better speeds but it took me longer to get there.

the slp's are quite a bit stronger. for example, the 8ab setup i was running on the slp piped/ported viper, pulled 9000 rpm. i put that setup on my aaen piped/ported viper and it would pull 8700-8800 and then drop to 8500. it couldn't pull the same setup at all. the midrange is much better on the slp's too. i just love them pipes, other than the sound. the aaens still sound cooler and are lighter, but don't make the power that the slp's do. neither set of pipes are hard to tune/jet. they both are easy. i could actually get away, w/a slightly smaller jet on the slp piped viper, versus the aaen piped viper, when going for the same piston wash. the only difference on the sleds was that the slp sled had a mega head and my aaen sled has the stock head, so maybe i was having to throw slightly more jet at it, to help keep it cool, cause the stock head doesn't cool as well as a mega head......or its partially cause my stock viper head gives me more squish velocity, versus my custom mega head setup on the other sled. mileage on both machines is 8mpg.

I have heard one Viper I ran into in the UP at Pat's that had the SLP's. They are pretty darn quiet. Almost un-noticeable...I have run AAEN's stuff over the years and though he makes good pipes they usually are pretty conservative. Too bad PSI got out of it about the time the Viper came out. I bet he would have had a decent set for this sled. I remember he had showed a set in one of his last catalogs but he was out of biz shortly after and I don't believe they got past the prototype stage. I heard he (Bruce K.) went through a bad divorce and pulled out of Wisconsin. I see he is out west now in Utah. He still carries triples for the SX 700 motor.

Yeah aaen is pretty conservative. SLP's are pretty quiet as you stated. Exactly about PSI......too bad they went outta biz before they got to make some viper pipes. I would have bet that they would work great. His sx-r pipes I heard were very good. I like the sound of them too.

Bruce Kahlhammer the owner of PSI used to work for Aaen. Olav was kind of the first guy out there that started the aftermarket biz. He used to do alot of stuff for Yamaha's race team in the early 70's. Bruce K. was like the second guy to spin off out there and he made his first big $$ on the back of the Yamaha Phazer 485cc fan with his pipe. He sold a ton of them and my uncle and I were some of his first customers. He was so small back then he would spend and hour with you on the phone just chatting about tuning a Phazer. I used to have a set of his PSI phazer twin pipes on mine after I tried his single. I ran flat slide carbs on it too. That thing was quick in it's day. I could beat up on larger L/C sleds in 750 ft.
