2001 SX600R track torn around stud and allowed stud to eat away at exchanger.

-Can exchanger be removed from under the tunnel or pull engine ?
-Sled seemed to run ok but, son thought flashing light was low engine oil notice discolored head on PTO side. Should I pull head and replace gasket ?
-Anyone have an exchanger or track for sale ?

how's the compression on the cyl.? that looks like it got quite hot, probably didn't do the piston any good. I would pull head & cylinder to check it over if it were mine.

Looked in the cylinders with a piston/cylinder light and could see no damage on any of the piston tops. I wonder if the heat could of made the piston/rings brittle. I will do a compression check. Anyone know what all models and years of exchanger's will fit ? What should the torque be at on the head nuts ?

I know its not the proper fix but I fixed one like that with JBweld and its still working fine after 2 years. We intended to change the exchanger over the summer but forgot about it and he is still riding it like that with no problems.

Ouch! You might be able to pull the track and get a good welder to fix that w/o pulling it out of the sled. Or with the right torch and a product called Alumaweld, you could fix it. I tried a big hole like that with Alumaweld, but all I had was a small propane torch and I couldn't get the exchanger to stay hot enough for the Alumaweld to flow. Alumaweld is an aluminum "brazing" rod for lack of a better term.

I've not had good luck welding heat xchangers, they bubble & pit like crazy. i think either the aluminum is not very pure or over time the coolant has absorbed into the pores.

H/exchanger is not worth fixin. Plus, the fix might leave you high & dry out in BFE. A used h/exchanger is @ 50 bucks. WHOOPEE
That cylinder should at least have the heads taken off, and visually inspect everything in the combustion chamber. This is theminimum.

If it were mine................replace exchanger and remove head for a look. In my mind, if it was hot enough to discolor the paint, then it is hot enough to cause damage. definatly worth the teardown. My 2 cents.

I would make sure the head isnt warped or cracked. As for how to fix? start by removing the studs. they can be welded but are not fun to replace
