I am in the process of replacing my 1988 phazer 480's motor and clutches, and have it mostly assembled. I don't have the drive belt in, but wanted to start it up and let it idle for a little while, as the guy I bought the motor from oiled down the cylinders and I wanted to burn that out. But when I started the snowmobile, it backfired, and then idled. It did the same thing over and over and over again. It backfires once or twice then idles like new. Why is this?!?? I don't want to ruin my motor, but I need to have it running asap as I want to ride it with a few buddies.
Here are a few things that might help. My phazer is a phazer deluxe, but the motor is a phazer standard motor, so I removed all my electric start stuff. (I never had a battery in it anyway, but all the wiring and starter motor stuff was all still connected, but I now removed it all.) I replaced the reed valves in the new motor with my aftermarket ones off the old motor. It has a dg pipe WITH the correct jets. Hopefully that stuff will help, as I have NO clue what to do. I feel like scrapping the darn thing out because of all it's trouble.
Thank You,
Brody

It could be ignition timing or it may be a ground issue. Run a ground wire from the motor to the frame.

Thanks for the advice! It helped! It runs excellent now! I can't believe a ground wire made that big of a difference!
