I have been looking over the site to get info on changing the bearings on my 2000 mtn max. The drive shaft bearings are shot on the chain case side but I plan to do both sides. I am looking for how to info. I have the chain case off and chain off. Looking for an efficient way to get this done. Looks like I may as well pull the chain case off, the bearing is pressed in, correct?

Thanks, Lenny

yep ..pull the case and knock out the bearing and install a new one ..I always use a big sockit to knock it out and install. then go over to other side, there are two set screws on the inside part of the tunnel on the shaft..you'll have to loosen those..then take the speedo housing off and remove that bearing..somtimes hard to get off..but it will come off..slap another one on and reinstall speedo and tighten set screws

my 2 cents

yea the speedo side can sometimes be a real pain if it has been on a while. they wear slightly on the axle, and sometimes need to be pressed off the axle. good call on replacing both. dont forget to check the condition of the seal and spring on the crankcase side. good luck

speedo side setscrews

tighten the set screws LAST! after the skid, track, chaincase, chain and gears are all on and tightened up.

thanks guys, It was a fairly smooth job, not as hard as I thought. I'm heading out to the big Horn Mtn on the 8Th of next month and wanting to gear it properly. I live in the UP of Michigan and have it geared low now, 42/21, I wanna try the 42/20 since we'll be climbing a bit more than usual here in da UP. Honesty I have little experience and just taking recommendations from other friends that don't have yammi sleds. Any suggestions from experience. I did also tighten the set screws last after I fired the machine up and spun the track a bit, I guess that is to reduce the risk of side pressure on the bearings?

Thanks again, your info is greatly appreciated

one more thing, is anyone familiar of a jet chart for different elevations. I need to re jet and both clutches soon, just looking for info. The Yamaha shop said he could get it for me Mon but hoping to find it before than.
