im not sure what excessive oil usage is..i only put on 600 miles riding this winter..sled still under 2000 miles on it.....i have been using roughly 1 quart of oil per 115 miles or so....not 1 tank, but 1 quart...... i heard that when pumps fail they go wide open, but i would think at wide open i would be using much more then i am..... my oil cable gap is set at around 22-23 mm, I use citgo sea and snow and i hear thats the same as yamalube, so i dont think that would make a difference..this is my first year owning this sled, so i haven nothing to go by.... once again per 115 miles, i use 1 quart of oil..by the way, i still have gas left, so im not using a full tank... also, i have not fouled any plugs, and sled rides great.. Cable looks good. doesnt look to bind anywhere, and i have no more bar risers on sled as i removed them months ago.. cables are all good.....

Your probably pretty close to perfect. Rough guideline is about a qt per tank of fuel. Your in that ballpark so I wouldn't worry about it. That's me though.:)

run it.....that seems to be just about what i get....havent had a problem in 5000 miles

oil useage

I agree. My oil useage is about 112-118 miles per quart of oil at 50-60 mph cruising speed. I never run trails, just wide open lake running. You are good IMO.

sound about right. does it smoke bad? if so you might be a little rich. look at your spark plugs, are they all oily or brown?

I have developed the same oil consumption problem this year. I am now going thru 2+ quarts per tank. How do I check the oil pump? Any other suggestions? By the way - it broke 21,000 this weekend (2000 sxr 700) so this kind of stuff is obviously of no surprise.

Thanks

Your oil pump is probably worn to the point that it needs replacement. Yamaha does not give any specs for oil pump flow, the only way to know pump condition is by the amount of oil used compared to gas.

The pumps gradually wear with use and oil consumption increases with wear.

What kind of maintenance has the engine and sled needed in that time?

Next to nothing. Replaced 1 piston/rings due to a plugged carberator 2 years ago. It's run so incredibally good that I haven't wanted to mess with it much. We are now going to hand it down to my daughter and I'll put some work into it but not sure how much. The chaincase is on my mind and I'm almost embarrased to say that I haven't done anything with that either. Anyway, the oil consumption is my biggest concern.

Thanks for the feedback
