Went for a ride last night and when I tried to back out of a situation I couldn't get the reverse to ingauge on my Viper. It always worked fine up to this point. When I got home I tried it again in the driveway and it would go in reverse but it would grind bad and slip out as it started moving. What could this be?
sounds like it olny enguaging half way ...linkage probally needs adjusted ....i would open the chain case and make sure you didnt eat up the small gear that makes the reverse work

I will check that this evening, hopefully if any damage is done its only to the small gear, that one's cheap!

I wonder if the fork is bent? I don't know how this would of happened though
fork could be bent ..or the 2 little round pegs on the fork that ride inbetween the the grove on the bottom gear could be worn or broke ....let me know what you find out ...i have a reverse kit that the bottom bolt come loose and went thru the outer case so i am sure i have just about any part you need to fix your reverse .

Thanks, I've actually got an extra fork but I'll let u know if something else comes up.
I'm hoping that it will simply be an adjustment but with my luck I probably have a laundry list of parts to replace.

yes but...
You'd be surprised how much grinding these reverses will endure before damage, I would adjust the turnbuckle and apply locktite, before opening up your chaincase.

yes but...
...also on another note, if you do open your chaincase check the top gear for play, sometimes this gear gets loose and when shifting between forward and reverse can snap a perfectly good chain...BTDT!

Nice to know, I don't exactly have extra chains lying around, lol.
However, my top gear is tourqued to spec and I used loctite as well.

I thought I should post a quick update on what my problem turned out to be. I got out the repair manual and made sure that all of the linkages were the correct distance apart. While doing this is discovered that the upper mount on the chaincase (the gold coloured half-moon piece with the steel coller around the bolt) was backed off just enough to make the assembly feel loose. I removed the bolt and installed it again with some loctite and problem solved!
