I'm about ready to give up on my 79 ET250 and purchase a late 80's or early 90's Phazer / Phazer II.

Which of the above models was proven to be more reliable and which had the better performance.

Second, what model year was noted as the fastest or had the best performance aftermarket mod ability. I'm looking for a good project sled and am looking to start with a good model / year.
 
The Phazer II's started in 1990 and I.M.O. (For the money) is the best all around trail sled Ever for those who skill level is beginner/novice to the average rider.

I still have mine...1990 and up..parts are easy to find and they are a blast to build!
My Phazer has handle bars off a 93 sx and while I was stealing parts, I took the adjustable struts too..slapped on a Bendar pipe, burned it down, rejetted and did the carb mod..now there is very few sleds that can touch her in the twisty's..lol..have fun! I love my Phazer
 
I still have (had and sold my 84) my 1993 Phazer II. Many mods to the sled and a fun sled to ride. Stud the track and not worry about throwing one. No heat exchanger to worry about. Light weight a ball to throw around thru the wood sections.

You are so right. The Yamaha factory service bulletin on the carb modification is a MUST. The 485 was noted for midrange burndowns. I witnessed one while a buds wife rode her's and she burned a piston while trail riding. Also, re-cutting the combustion chamber in the head will help too. Not adding/subtracting any volume (CR still the same), just reshaping for a better non-dentonation head. Must be done by a skilled professional. PSI for an example.

My early 84 had PSI race porting, custom twin pipes and I installed a pair of 38mm Lectron flat slide carbs. The flat slide carbs are the shitz. Throttle response is nothing short of amazing.

Sold the 84 in parts, but kept the carbs. Maybe I will get motivated and install them on the 93 Phazer II. It has stock porting with an Aaen single pipe.
 
Look for newer one after they stopped using the ypz clutch if possible. 1992 I think. Also can cut pistons to sx spec on intake side for a little cheap HP
 
i have 4 of them they are a blast stock or in race trim i use for racing the 91 is the wifes and i just picked up a 84 that needs a little work but is real nice
 
Get a pipe (bender, aaen, psi) its gonna be the biggest improvement besides getting traction. Jet accordingly.
I have 38mm flatslides on mine. Ran stock carbs for yrs with a bender pipe no problem but its nicer to cablibrate with the flatslides.
My old sled this fall got treated right. New crank, fresh top end. E-start removed w all the hardware/battery. Oil injection delete (flatslides need 2 cables or u rig one for the oil pump). I opted to remove the oil pump/tank. Easier to get to carbs too w/out the tank in the way.
Put on my old viper skis.
44 inch ski stance. 370 pounds dry. 70+hp. 1inch camoplast. Should be fun.
 
I bought a 90 PZ 2 this summer. I'm installing a 136" x10 with fox, 1.25" ripsaw, plastic saddleless skis from a newer Phazer. Got a set of 38mm flatslides, ready to go in, I'll take out the oil injection and premix the gas. It came with a Aaen pipe, widened front, and boyeson reeds. Almost done with the skid install, just waiting on the reinforced mounting brackets. I got a 2" riser also.
 
i had a early skinny phazerback in the day,had a psi pipe and a few studs,ran 88 in a 1000 ft,also was its top speed,dam thing was indestructable

I don't comprehend why you guys unhook the oil injection. I have never had one fail in nearly 40 years and they meter the oil according to demand/rpm. Thats a lot better in my mind than burning the same mixture throughout the rpm range. Oil injection is why everyone switched to Yamaha in the old days and is the industry standard now! Shaking gas cans nowadays is like rubbing two sticks together to light a fire, they make bic lighters now!
 
wow,thats amazing,i had two pumps spring on my exciter,not cool to dump a ton of oil into the gas line before the pump,thats the problem,equals lean condition,only way i would run it again is injecting it after the carbs into the boots,but why,premix works and used pumps are 20+ years old,brought one of my pumps to a buddy of mine,certified yamaha mechanic,he reset it once,sprung again and he tossed it.told me they ran premix on all there old race exciters,good enough for me,and my 340 srx didnt come with oil injection from the factory either
 
I would keep the oil pump, but I changed over to flatslide carbs for tuneability reasons, and finding the right cables to make it work, has been a pain, so I just decided to pre-mix, unless I find the solution before riding season.
 
1988 phazer here, MOST RELIABLE SLED EVER MADE.everytime I get on it, it's like
"how can this thing have soo much balls" leaves a smile everytime. somtimes I cant stop laughing"rofl and this is a FAN COOLED" my son hit a tree with mine 2 years back
smashed pretty much everything in the front end,I DROVE IT HOME! rebuilt the front end {phazer parts are ez to come by, whole parts sleds for 3-400 $} Still driving it today, will NEVER sell. Get one, you'll love it
