I'd guess its RFI sheilding to protect primary ignition against radio frequency interference.
Typically just an aluminum foil sheild/covering grounded to the chassis. You could make your own with foil, soldered to a piece of wire and ground the other end to the chassis.
Or in this case to protect the signal output of the pizo-electric knock sensor from RFI.

Thats exactly what it is...my old 911 Carrera has this on its wiring as well.

Still in use today on most primary ignition wiring and other high and low current circuits.
so its just a wire with a shield made with some foil solder to the foil and going to the cdi ???

Its only on the wire that goes to the DCS sensor and its like a regular covered wire that is wrapped with wire brade and covered again. The inner wire is the signal wire and the outer wire is the grounded wire. I don't think the grounded outer wire is required for the system to operate as it does not continue all the way to the sensor. It only covers the span of the wire.

not sure to understand properly ..do i really need the wire with the shield ??

No..but if you are using a 2002 SRX wiring harness and DCS sensor it will already have it.

Come to think of it mod, try using some heater duct tape (the adheasive backed aluminum stuff used for protecting underhood stuff from exhaust heat), crimped or soldered to a piece of wire. I think it's a bit thicker and won't tear as easy making it easier to work with. Roll one end into a round wire like shape and crimp it to the wire. then run the wire to a good ground.
It acts as a shield and isn't tied to the wireing it protects. It just wraps around the wiring not unlike the black tape the harness is wrapped in. Another application is found within coax cable under the braided outer wire.
You can find it by the roll in the heater duct section of any Home D, Lowes, etc.
but why going to a good ground ?? that wire goes into cdi ..one wire goes from cdi to the knock sensor and the other one with the shield goes to the cdi...
sideshow bob i'm running the 2001 srx wiring i think everything is the same just need to add those wire into the 2002 cdi ...not sure i wanna go thru all the wiring from a 2002 and switch for a viper dash and sensor again so i try to keep my 2001 wiring

maybe if i found a harness from a 2002 i could take that parts out of it

I'd guess the shield uses the CDI ground which ends up at the same place as all other grounds, the chassis. Think of the chassis (and all other metal parts attached) as a big ol' ground wire.
So in your application, the shield is grounded through CDI ground rather than using an additional wire. Splice the shield to the ground wire going to the CDI.
Sorry for the confusion.
