Having issues on 01 vmax 600 with squealing at idle from belt/ clutch area as well as random, and i mean very random issue with at idling driving itself, even in reverse. Its works excellent for 100 miles then randomly squeals like crazy. Only does it when its been ridden, first start of the day and warming up it doesn't do it. Giving me fits and i dont quite get how to adjust the belt/check into whats causing all this. Any help?

adjustment is made on the back side of the secondary. There are 3 bolts there and washers.Remove a washer and the belt will drop down some and eliminate squeal. But you should check if your center to center is correct first. As belts wears thinner..you can add a .5mm or 1 mm washer as needed.Belt should be just slightly above sheaves. You can do a search on this issue I am sure.

I like putting the sled on a stand then settimg it so the track just barely moves or doesnt but you can push it with one finger.

I guess what im confused over is I put the brand new belt on in november. Got the squeal at idle which everyone says is typical for new belt. It was sitting perfectly in the secondary. Now we have put 700 miles on the sled and the squeal is still there and now all of the sudden after 700 miles its starting to drive itself at idle, but not all the time, just sometimes, but when it does it can go 10 mph on its own.
This makes no sense to me as i would think after 700 miles on a new belt the squeal would go away and it would be stretched out more then new so it would be looser then when i first put it on. What the heck would make it get tighter after 700 miles?

Ok I pulled the secondary and cleaned it, checked over and everything looks good. I think the belt i got is the issue. Its an 8DN belt which i was told by the dealer is the correct belt. It seems short and wide. I've owned the sled for 7 years but it had an ultimax on it when i bought it until this year when i bought the new stock one. No issues till new belt. I have removed the washers in the three bolts for deflection and that helped, but the belt isnt right.

Can anyone confirm what belt a 2001 Vmax should have on it stock, dealers too stupid to know i think.. I dont have a book or anything for this sled.

8dn says it in the tech pages stock specs

Ok thanks. I think it may need some harder break in on the belt, 665 miles this season and still not stretched. The girlfriend never goes over 45 lol!

I have heard complaints in the past that Yamaha is known for not making the same number belts equal in length so maybe i just got an off length belt by a bit..

bolts

The three bolts for adj belt do wear a lot and removing washers is not enough for proper belt deflection. Also make sure the washer on the inside of the sheeves is still there because thats where the bolts ride. without that washer the bolts are riding on aluminum.Compare a new bolt to yours.
