I've just used the cloth wrap used to wrap headers. Available at O'Reillys. They also carry a sleave of 'wrap material', for springs and hoses to go into. Kinda like heatshrink.

The cloth header wrap works well. I use strips of high temp silicone rubber. I bought orgae silicone rubber strips which are 1/8" thk x 2" wide by 36" long. I cut strips wide enough to protect the pipe from the spring. I glued the strips to the pipe using ornage high temp. RTV sealant. I bough the silicone strips from McMaster Carr. You can check them out on the web.
