I have been asking about putting in a peak head. Good response, but had a related question. when I take off the old head, and am looking at the pistons, what should I be looking for as signs of things going good, or possible problems. I know pitting is a sign of detonation=bad. Also is it desireable to clean these piston tops, and what to use and how to do. disturbed particulates in motor=bad. I thought of a little ATF soak then towel. any suggestions?

You could shop vac it to get particles, but if the carbon build up isn't much I'd just leave her alone. The tops wont get to much build up if the jetting is good. The more fuel it gets, the cleaner its gonna look. Find some pics of proper piston wash and compare to yours, would tell you how your jetting is. IMO If your pistons are real dirty from carbon i think i would just pull them out to clean them, and the cylinders too. How many miles on the top end?
miles
2000 machine 9000 miles, but rebuilt 1500 ago. new pistons, rings. should be good.
