I hear everyone say "test test test" and yes i test alot. i own several helixes, springs and weights. but i dont know the THEORY. i use xxx helix with xxx spring. IN THIS POST I AM LOOKING FOR FOR SOMEONE TO EXPLAIN TO ME (alot of us) explain how it works, how do i know when to try a differnt sec. spring ???? yes, lower #'s helix grab belt tighter.. ok great ???? stiffer spring, looser spring ......... 8 different helixes and i can get them all to run the same e.t i have an avenger 3 so i see graphs and dl them. GREAT.. if u dont REALLY know how to tune, you have what i have. alot of impressive data that means NOTHING.. thx (yes tony, i would like to have you help me this year)

MIKE LOL !!!!!!!!!!. A SLED LIKE YOURS AND WHAT YOUR DOING, THE FIRST THEORY YOU NEED TO DO IS GET THAT SUCKER TO JIMS. CHUCKIES SX WENT OVER THE TOP AFTER THAT C & H VISIT. NOW TO REALLY ANSWER YOUR QUESTION, YOU CAN,T ASK FOR A CLUTCHING THEORY BECAUSE EVERYBODY HAS A DIFFERENT ONE. MIKE THAT SLED SHURE WON,T BE CLUTCHED LIKE A STOCKER!! BUT I WILL GIVE YA MINE THOUGH, TUNE AT YOUR PRIMARY NOT THE SECONDARY. LOAD YOUR WEIGHTS AS HARD AS YOUR MOTOR WILL TAKE. THAN FIND A HELIX WITH A SHALLOW FINISH AND TWIST SECONDARY JUST ENOUGH TO HOLD BELT. BUT, SOME GO THE OTHER WAY, RUN LITE WEIGHTS AND LOAD MOTOR WITH A STEEP ANGLE CAM. SEE WHAT I MEAN. 3:16 (yammie tony)

i worked for a sled racer when i was younger he alwats tought me gear down and shifht it hard and you will be fast. But trying to clutch a sled right sometimes is like open a safe it takes alittle bit of time.i have had a hell of a time with my rx1,read specs on primary springs if your sled id under reving go to next spring or take weight off front weights.what has worked for me is to slet the sled tach sweep mine shpuld turn 10200rpm so i have it starting at 10100 and pulling to 10400 and its gong like a freight train also thanks to turk for getting me close

I agree with Chris. Read Olaf's clutch book (and/or others as many times as needed). You may not use much of the info but once you understand the how's/why's of the operation of a CVT system you will be able to use and understand what others have found and how it applies.

As with anything else, if you don't know how it works (basics) you will not be able to adjust it properly. At that point you are just a parts changer hoping for the best so read up!!

I also agree with Tony. There is more than one way to skin a cat that will get you results. Again, undesrtanding the basics helps undestand the methods and how they apply to what you are trying to achieve.

What I would add is that there is always a give and take when it comes to clutching and there is no perfect setup for all senerios. A great straight line, out of the hole 600ft setup may leave you wanting in a corner to corner trail condition and there are many other pos/neg aspects that can effect what you do. Agressive clutching is also harder on equipment and fuel mileage so you may need to keep better tabs on your sled to avoid problems.

One thing on testing.

Do any and all changes on the same day. Then test them.

I see many guys that try something out one day. Go home and think about it. Change parts. Then go out and test the changes on another day. That don't work!!

Day to day changes in conditions (weather, air, snow) have such a great effect on performance that you won't have a good barometer to accuratly gauge the real effect of those changes. Changes made one the same day under the same conditions will have merit and will mean much more.

Good Luck,

opsled

SRX154 DID NOT ADD IN HIS POST THIS SLED IS A ASPHALT SLED THAT RUNS 1/4 MILE WITH BIG POWER. THIS SRX IS A AWESOME SLED. 3:16 (yammie tony)

thanks for that tony, i apprecite it. you are correct, justin conjurred up one heck of a combination for this ride. If it didnt weigh 9000 lbs. it would probably be fast. so much good information givin by all u guys as well !!!!

I do plan on taking it to batavia as soon as its all back together.
tony i will get ahold of you and chuckie as far as a date goes for that.

i think where i was going with this post is more for the sec. spring. i have a hauck red in it now. that thing takes 2 men and a small child to push. is that too tight ???? how do i know ??? YES !!!! THATS IT !!! THE HOWS AND WHYS OF SPRING TENSION.

Tony said just enough to grab it ?????

as far as weights, i run heelclickers and adjust them accordingly to my downloaded run. 8400 off the hit gradually to 8650. right where justin wants it. BUT !!!! dyno will tell all.

I DON,T THINK THATS RIGHT YOU NEED FOUR GUYS TO SET THAT BACK CLUTCH. COULD RUN INTO BINDING ISSUES THAT WAY!!! ANYWAYS SHURE YOUR ENGINE BUILDER GIVES YA RUFF SHOT IDEA WHAT TO SHOOT FOR PEAK RPM, JIM WILL FINE TUNE FOR YA. WHEN THATS DONE, YOU WILL CLOSE THE DOOR TO YOUR VAN.YOUR DYNO SHEET IS ALL YOU WILL NEED. THAT MAN IS AWESOME. LOVE TO GO WITH YA WHEN YOUR READY. YOU MAY FINE SOMETHING YOU WOULD OF NEVER EXPECTED. NOW YOUR SECONDARY. ALL THOSE SPRINGS HAVE A RATE JUST LIKE THE PRIMARY SPRINGS. STIFFER THEY ARE THE LESS TWIST IS NEEDED TO HOLD BELT ANOTHER WORDS SHEAVE SIDE PRESSURE. WHICH IS VERY INPORANT ON THE TAR ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU GUYS DO THOSE BURNOUTS. NOW THAT HAUCK RED SPRING I THINK HE CALLS A SNO-CROSS SPRING AND WINDS DIFFERENT THAN THE YAMAHA SPRINGS. THAT THE ONE I GAVE YA ? THATS PRETTY STOUT. ANOTHER THING ABOUT YOUR SECONDARY YOU CAN FINE TUNE YOUR RPM TO ABOUT 150 WITH TWIST, AFTER THAT FORGET IT, YOUR BACK AT FRONT CLUTCH. I THINK HEEL CLICKERS ARE PERFECT FOR YOUR SLED. VERY TUNABLE WEIGHTS. TELL YA MAN I WOULD NOT THINK OF ANYTHING UNTIL JIM GETS A FEW PULLS ON THIS SLED. YOU MAY JUST BE SURPRIZED WHAT HE FINES. 3:16 (yammie tony)

ya, thats ur red spring. ill be going to jims in the next 10-14 days. sled is compltely torn down. found 25 more lbs to get rid of. i will let ya know date and time. would like to get rid of some rotating weight. cant really afford to buy new. noone has anything like that for sale though. titanium or aluminum jackshafts, driveshafts, driveshaft brake etc...

CHUCKIE WAS LOOKING FOR THAT STUFF TOO. BIG $$$$$$$. BUT WEIGHT IS THE KEY. LOOK KNOW FARTHER AGAIN THAN CHUCKIES. 700 cc HP LOW 160,s AND RUNS IN THE NINES. LOOK AT THE WEIGHT HE CUT OUT OF THAT SLED. PRETTY INPRESSIVE. SRX,s ARE HEAVY, THEY ARE NOT AS LITE AS PEOPLE THINK. talk to ya soon. 3:16 (YAMMIE TONY)
