I believe 2001 and up sleds had a strengthened drive shaft. Mine broke in the same fashion yours did on my 2000 MM, hit a buried stump with my track climbing a hill. Track speed was probably around 60, actual speed was probably closer to 20. I was lucky enough that it sheared inside the driver, so it held together to limp it back to my vehicle, 8 miles away. You may want to search a little on here, should give you some good results on the actual year they changed the drive shaft for a stronger one.
If you do alot of jumpin' make sure your not running your track too tight. As the suspension colapses the track will get tighter, and if its already too tight before the suspension to starts to work it puts alot of stress on the shaft on landings. My brother and I both broke 2 driveshafts a piece in one year, and everytime we broke them we were just cruisin down the trail back to the trailer, but we were doing alot of jumping prior to the trail.. Figured out we were running the tracks to tight... After we loosen them up we ran them for a year and a half with no problems..

yes, need to get the updated shaft. i would not buy a used shaft regardless.
