1999 SRX700
Had a lot of trouble this past season after I bought this neglected machine (rub through, snapped driveshaft, stator melted, pv pullthru, seized suspension bearings, all in 1 1/2 months). I was going to go through the entire machine, but it has 9200 miles and I haven't heard of a crank lasting for more than 14,000. So that means I have about 5000 at best left on the bottom end.
With a new crank being $1200, and rebuilding a crank being $1100 in bearings + labor, is there any alternative? I'm not a fan of buying someone elses used crank. I know how most people do not fog their machines (this machine was never fogged, he didn't even know what fogging meant), and I don't want to spend $400 on someones beat up old crankshaft.
I paid $1300, so spending $1200 on a crank is out of the question. What should I do? I know I've kind of ruled out every option besides selling it / part out...

How sure are you that crank in sled is original one to sled? Was previous owner original owner? Could have ben replaced already at 5,ooo so You might have 9,000 left? Entirely possible that already has "some one elses beat up old crank" in it right now. Personally being as you bought sled for 1300 (pretty good deal IMO) I would ride it like you stole it and worry about crank when it makes you.

I would send the crank to Jeff at Midwest Cranks in Green Bay WI for inspection. For about $30 to ship it in each direction plus jeff's labor, he should be able to tell you exactly what your crank needs. I have heard jeff is an expert on yamaha cranks since he does the warranty work for Yamaha in his region. You could give him a call to discuss it, maybe he has some rebuilt used cranks in stock. His phone no. is 920-434-3630. It is worth a phone call.

That approach stranded me twice far from home this past winter!!!
I may have found a solution. A member has pm'd me about buying his well taken care of bottom end for a good price. I was hoping not to go used, but I think i've exhausted the other options.
I'll hold onto the bottom end until she goes, and have a replacement ready to go right in

also a good plan. there is some maint that can be done before things break. as far as a crank goes, it isnt usually a wear item like powervalves, rings, carb rebuild and jackshaft bearing, those sort of things. having a spare is an easy way though
