I would go with stock yamaha pistons. When I had to rebuild mine, the two good pistons didn't have any scuffs along with the jugs. Sled had 2,700 miles on it. Could also go with Wiseco pistons. Heard its alot harder to eat up a Wiseco piston then it is a yamaha piston.

I think you answered your own question. OEM pistons are very good!

I did kinda ..But just wanted some input .... I usally use OEM parts all the time alittle on the fence ... do you now what srx base gasket they are useing on these things first i heard of it was 2 or 3 days ago i know about the bender head gasket thats on its way did't know anything about base gasket
srx base gasket has even ports. Viper base gasket has one water port larger (right cylinder if memory serves me). As the Bender gasket is designed with this viper gasket in mind, I left the stock Viper gasket in mine.
Oh, by the way you show any signs of detonation? Tiny flecks of purple on spark plug electrode? Scuffs only on one side of piston?

Scuff on intake side in middle cyl. Pto side is good Mag side had some scuffing but very little on all four corners . The stock base gasket has diff. size holes in each one center being the smallist . So the bender head gasket is designed to use the stock viper base gas. and if i use the srx base gas. then don't use the bender head gas. then . No detonation and what are the tiny little flecks of purple on spark plugs what would that be ....I don't have that but just wanted to now
You need the opticool gasket or the much more expensive head. I made reference to purple flakes or more acuratly purple balls on the electrode are early warning of detonation. Hard to tell if the scuffing you describe was from detonation...but it is possible.

question, if i'm going to re-ring my pistons, should i go ahead and get new pistons as well? i'm on the fence about this because i'm going to be running it on water this summer and don't feel that that would the best way to break in a new top end because as we know keeping a viper afloat requires a lot of full throttle
Would NOT use Wiseco pistons in a trail sled!! Race sled maybe but not a trail sled.

Care to explain why?
To easy to do a cold seize with Wiseco pistons if engine is not warmed up to operating temp before driving.Netefrog said:Care to explain why?

Just need to make sure you're the first out of the bar and suit up outside whilst idling.
