Well since the first week in March the SRX and my other sleds were parked for the season.Because of the Spring Flood situation,I had to leave the sleds in the garage until any possible threats of water was to come. The water didn't come to close this year and it was time today to wash the sleds and fog the motors. It being a nice 21 C day and sunny..I proceded to do so.
I just was curious how many pulls it was going to take to start up each sled also. The old 76 Pantera took 6 pulls to start. The SXR600 took 6 pulls to get running and the 700 XTC took six pulls also. This brought me to the SRX..I was thinking somewhere like in the 20 pull zone.I choked her and started pulling and to my amazement I had her going in 5 pulls..wow!! It acually out did the rest.I new the SRX was running really good towards the end of last season..especially after changing ther TPS,and the 8bu-10's were dialed in and had a great run down the ditch at a fast 100 mph riding with a damaged track.

Fogged the crap out of the sleds this time, removed anything basically foam like so mice can't eat also.. yeah SRX..you really surprised me today... ;)! ;)!

So what's your highest speed so far? Mine is 118-119 mph, and that's with a 1,25 ripsaw, not a 1' track.

Is this with a new Viper fuel pump? Did you drain the gas 2 months ago from bowls and tank?

my 02 roars to life at 3 pulls like clockwork. wether the temp is cool, freezing warm or HOT, doesnt matter. yamaha.....reliable

no this is with original pump and the gas still was in there prior to ending season.Of course I use Fitch Fuel Catalyst which keeps gas fresh at all times, actually no need to drain tanks..but I did anyways yesterday.

I think it was a better starter after I fiddled around with the choke mechanism and got it dead on precise..
I should be able to bury the needle now with my setup, just haven't had a chance to late in season when I track blew 2 windows out,I didn't want to take a chance.
All I know there was a stretch on ditch that was pretty straight and was able to only hit 90 on it over and over..then after my 8bu-10 set up being damn good..I started hitting 100 in the same area easily. So now I know that this sled will pull good, just wished I could of tried it on the River when it was mostly ice..should of buried the needle for sure.

I was reading a 98 tech manual the other day and it had all the updates listed, one that caught my eye was hard starting in cold weather, the enrichening system does not supply enough fuel to start in cold weather, the fix was to pull the plungers and file off 1 mm of the plunger nipple, makes sense as we all know dumping a little fuel down the plug holes and they fire right up.

that sounds interesting..has anyone done that with success???Now if that was an updated for the 98's..you would think for the years after Yamaha would have modded them enrichers then..

I usually never let my sled sit outside at nights. But I think I would like to try it one time in a -20 or lower temps and see how she would start the next day...I know it is harder to pull the motors when it is that cold, but if it gets gas instantly..it should still fire up early....

A little off topic but I took my carbs off and went through them. Will most likely be a bear to start next winter. Any tips?

With all the threads and posts on hard starting, its amazing no one else has found or posted this before!
I checked the part numbers on the SRX enrichment plungers from 1998 thru 2002 and they are all the same with no updates.
IMO...This would be worth try.

A primer bulb between the tank and the fuel pump is not the best solution as the fuel pump diaphram resists fuel being forced thru the pump.

Also there is a check valve inside the fuel pump that will not let fuel flow when it is not running, that is why yamaha does not use fuel shutoffs like the other make's do. to make a primer work you will need nipples in all three carbs.

Right after the line coming out of the tank..My sled is actually from ther US..maybe someone added it for all I know, sure looks like a factory fit to me anyways.

It's probably a yamaha fuel shut valve that has been installed later. You can find them in their accessory catalogue
