the 05 had a different skid altogether from its short track cousins.
it can be done but alot of effort would have to go into the project, even more if you wanted it to look right and have a nice fit and finish as the end result.
depending on your goals or concerns, i would think simply installing a track with shorter lugs and staying with the 144" would be alot simpler project.

What is the stock lug height on these tracks to begin with anyway?

IMO:
2005 Mountain Viper is argueably the best Viper ever. These sleds have DCS and a 144" x 2" track, the length that people are using on the newer cross over sleds.
If it were me...I would either cut the 2" LUGS DOWN TO A MORE TRAIL FRIENDLY 1 1/4" OR 1" height, or replace the track with one with a more appropriate lug for your useage.
If you are flat land riding this sled you may need to rejet and regear as well.
I have long tracked my 2002 SRX to a 144"x1 1/4" ripsaw and trail ride 1000s of miles a season...and I would NEVER go back to a short track!

After having owned 2, yes 2 05 Viper Mountains, I would buy it and LEAVE IT. Those sleds work great the way they are, throw a set of ice scratchers on there if you want and ride it.
The 2" Challenger that is on there is a great track. And the 05 saw the introduction of the Pro Mountain suspension which is a lot better than the Pro Action of the past. It should also have the wider saddleless mtn skis. These are great skis for the powder but do tend to "grab" if the powder is icy on top.
My advice is buy it, leave it, ride it.
