my friends got a yamaha 700 triple, i do not know much about it but it has been sitting a while and needs a rebuild... he has offered to give me it for next to nothing but i don't know if i can get it registered, it has been sitting a few years and we think its between the years of 1997 to 2001 and he got it from his friend who got it from another one of his friends that brought it up from Oklahoma but didn't give the paperwork and he no longer talks to him... is there any way i can register it in new york without paying a ton of money? ive heard i just need to make sure its not stolen and pay a registration fee? and if there is a better section for this post can someone please tell me so i can move it... any help is much appreciated...

the way I read it it is. but anyways I never said anything about money just that his DMV could answer his ?

Oh okay ^^^ I meant the part about figuring things out before he buys the sled, it sounds like his friend is cutting him some slack on the price. Which is a good thing, because even if he buys it and finds out registration will be extreme (which it shouldn't be, it should be around 10% of the amount he paid for it + annual registration fee, typically around $40.) and he wishes not to register, he can always resell and get the money back.

that was my other problem, if i buy it off someone who is not the original owner will his bill of sale work for me... ill call the dmv today and is it like a 100 dollar fee to see if it is stolen? someone told me it will cost 100 dollars to have it looked up. and i was hoping i didn't have to pay fair market value taxes...

Yeah I have never heard of the stolen look up fee, but yes even if you buy off someone who is not the original owner, as long as they write you a bill of sale you will be all set. What I do is have the person I buy off write it up for way less than I paid for it and say the motor was blown. That way I will pay much less come registration time. The place you register it at may see the low price on the bill of sale as a red flag and call up the person you bought from to double check, so just make sure they remember the fake dollar amount written on the bill of sale.

thats what i always do, my 88 exciter i bought for 150 dollars with a blown motor, i just have them wright as is and date it for a few months before hand lol when i registered my car they did even look at the bil of sale just asked how much i payed for it

You used to be able to take a "carbon copy" of the vin # to the dmv back in the day to get registered. Im not sure anymore. Yea a fake bill of sale is what I used to do. :dunno:
