Hi Guys,
Not sure what I've got yet, but I was wondering how much I could expect to have tied up in a total rebuild of a viper engine if I pull it myself and take the crank in to have it rebuilt, etc.?
Also, How much could I expect to pay for a used engine in running condition?
Are the SRX and Viper engines the same with the difference being the SRX has triple pipes?
I'll know more when I pull top end to see what I've got. Just asking in General right now and thinking "Worst Case".
Thanks

Ok, I bought the sled. 2002 Viper with 2200 miles. Tore it down far enough to determine what's going on. Center piston melted down, center crank/rod bearing burned up. Hole in the bottom of the case. What are my options?
1. buy a bottom used bottom end with crank, have the cylinder sleaved and new pistons
2. buy a case, have my crank rebuilt, have the cylinder sleaved and new pistons.
3. buy a new engine.
4. part the sled and run.
5 sell the sled as it sits.
I'd really prefer options 1, 2 or 3 since I've wanted a Viper for a while now. Thoughts from those that have been here? Anybody have a lead on any parts?
Also, I thought I read somewhere if i buy a membership to the site I get access to service manuals and a free hat? is that accurate? Honestly, I'd sign up for just the manuals, actually that hat would be nice too!

I have yet to tear a engine down to the crank, but i know a crank is almost as much as a used engine. If it were me i would buy a used engine and give that a tear down and chech specs. Then you can give it new gaskets and rings if it good. I see a lot on ebay for less then a grand. Check your local sled salvage. But their are engine guys on here way more knowledgeable on motors and what to do than me. Hopefully they will chime in.

I have a pdf manual I got from another member here. Send me your email and I'll send you what I got. I did notice I couldn't find the section on brake assembly / disassembly. But maybe it's there and I'm doin something wrong. Let me know if you want it. Gil

To answer your questions the viper has a bout a 2lb lighter crank then the srx.

Thanks for the responses. After a nights sleep It may not be as bad as I thought it was. Maybe I don't need a whole new crank since it seems to spin smoothly and freely. Maybe I can have a new rod and bearing pressed on it, have it trued and run the existing bearings. I'm probably a little over my head on making the determination whether or not it can be salvaged so I think my best bet is going to be to pull it and bring it in somewhere to get a professional opinion. I'm going to post some pictures and questions soon. I'm going to have questions on whether the head can be salvaged, questions about resleaving cylinders, etc. This is my first total engine rebuild so it should be a good learning experience. Then maybe someday I'll have enough knowledge to help others out and give back to the site.

Wow, I had no idea parts for these things were so expensive and hard to come by. It's looking more like I'm going to have to sell this thing and try to get my $ back out of it... I'll keep watching Ebay and other sites for parts to come up for a while before I do anyhing rash.

I did, but I'm still going to have quite a bit in it. $375 Crank plus shipping plus my core, $300 for cylinders (I probably need 2), Not sure how much a head is going to run yet, Plus case gaskets, plus a top end Rebuild kit. and not sure how much it is going to cost to have a case welded, but I can't find a reasonablly priced one. I'm loooking at $1200+. I bought it expecting to find one melted piston and cylinder.
I'm thinking I'd have $2300 - $2400 in this by the time I'm done, which isn't maybe all that bad. Maybe my expectations are a little warped because my brother will sell me his 2003 for $2500 with < 3K miles on it in mint shape with a factory cover.
Theres one engine on ebay for $1030, but that's a risk because you really don't know what you're getting if you can't look at it. I get nervous when someone tells me 145psi on all 3 cylinders. I thought the PTO side of these should measure a few lbs less so if someone tells me it has even compression, I don't believe they actually did a compression test. I've only had a yamaha for 1 year, so I don't claim to be an expert, but I guess I'm just skeptical.
Like I said, I'll just have to sit on it for a while and see if parts become available since I really don't want to see this sled parted If I held onto it throught the winter, I'm sure I could find one that hit a tree or rolled hard.

my math is crank 375+ship 30,+cylinders and pistons 300+ ship 20 gaskets 150 +case weld 70 plus misc. 100= $1045.

How much do you suppose a head is, 100+? Maybe they can be machined? it is pretty badly tore up from detonation.
Anybody recommend anybody who welds cases, mills heads, rebuilds cranks, etc in minneapolis? I've heard Bill Bune, but heard he isn't good about telling you how much it is going to be up front or answering questions.
sxr1000 - just want to be clear, I'm not saying the prices are inflated, just saying I underestimated the cost of the rebuild.

Have you looked into Bill Bune Enterprises? They are in Anoka, MN, probably just over the river from you, and are very good to work with. They welded my case last year and put a new bearing and seal on my crank trued it. Very reasonable!! I think the crank work was like $110 can't remember for sure but the welding was like $15 or 20. They are on the internet, google them. I supplied my own bearing & seal, which was like $35 and $25, I think.
BTW, If you need any help with anything, I live pretty close to you, over in Spring Lake Park, I would be glad to help out. Call me if you want. 763-439-5748 -Andy

I'm going to give Bill a call and see if I can bring my parts in today to have him take a look.
Thanks for the awesome offer Andy! I'm sure I'll need some help when I start putting this thing back together.

Took my parts in to Bill Bune at lunch - Thanks for the lead Andy. Had him look at everything and give me advice. He said he can weld my case no problem. His estimate didn't sound bad either. He was also going to put a water pump kit in it for me as long as we are at this point. I left it there for repair.
He looked at my crank - it has been welded on the PTO and Mag sides. Not sure if that means somebody has been in there before or if some came welded from the factory.
I think he may have sold me on getting the cylinders sleaved or nicked rather than putting used cylinders in it.
He also said he could polish my head but my comprssion would be down about 10psi on that cylinder and he recommended I find a used one.
So I'll probably end up getting a crank and head from a member here, and sending my cylinders out to have them rebuilt.
I picked a real doosey of a sled for my first engine rebuild. Oh well it is a learning experience and at least this way I'll know what I have. I probably won't break even on it if I tried to sell it, but I bought it to ride it, not make money.

cranks on vipers are welded from factory. brothers 02 was welded when it blew up the mag connecting rod at 7000rpm.
