Need recommendations for '03 viper mountain

Looks like I'm getting a very clean, low mileage viper mountain with Mountain performance head and bender single pipe and can. It's currently set up for mountains at approx. 9,000 feet. I'm going to be breaking trial/trail riding here in MN. Anyone have good recommendations for clutching/gearing, I assume the stock specs are for sea level should get me close. Also thinking of 1 1/4 track.

contact bender for carb and clutch calibrations for that pipe. that will get you a baseline. with the mpi head, you need to confirm which inserts are in there. seems like they offered three choices and you may have issues if your running the 20 cc domes at lower elevation. you will want to go with 22 cc inserts or look for a stock head.

good luck with any type of customer support at mpi, sorry to bash a site supporter, but they lost it a few years back and 2 stroke info there is non existent.

look at stock gearing less 1 tooth on the upper for your area, depending on whats in there now.

I have a 2003 Mt Viper. Gearing is stock. Mt. Viper came geared pretty high and many steep and deep guys have had to lower their gearing for more track speed. But back here in MN the gearing is fine for off trail, so I'd just keep it stock for off trail riding. If you trail ride a lot you may find your self wanting to gear higher, as you will find the Mt Viper will top out at about 80-ish mph with stock gearing.

For clutching I use a Heel Clicker 40-10 kit with the red spring. I basically use the high elevation recipe recommended with the Heel Clicker kit, but I have tweaked it some to bring rpm's down as it had, and still has a tint of over rev sometimes.

Oh, and I use the same Peak Billet Head from MPI your sled has. It's a great Head and really helps keeping the Viper engine cooled down. You will find that Head to be an excellent mod to the engine. But I concur with Snowdad4 to be sure you have the 22cc domes installed and not the 20cc or 21cc domes inside the head, on top of each cylinder. The 20cc domes were for over 10,000 feet elevation and the 21 cc domes are for 5,000 - 10,000 feet. 22cc domes are for 0 - 5,000 feet, which MN obviously falls in.
