I went to a local Yamaha dealer today to buy a new OEM belt for my '96 VMax XT 600.
After he messes around with the microfiche, he tells me he's out of the 89-L, which is spec, but he gives me another Yamaha belt. He said Yamaha superceded the serial numbers around '97-'98, so the one he's selling me is the one I need.
The SN on it is SMA-8CA47-10-00
Can someone tell me if this is a legit OEM replacement for my sled and the belt it was originally spec'd with?
My sled is stock and I want to keep it that way... if someone can cross-reference this part number I'd appreciate it.
Thanks!

Yo!
Just bumping up to see if someone has the ability to cross-reference these two belts.
Is the SMA-8CA47-10-00 belt considered "stock" for the '96 VMax 600?
Thanks

The SMA- belt is interchangable with the 89L-, 8CJ, & 87X- (and maybe others) It fits all the twin 600 & 500's & exciter's. It's yamaha's "soft" compound belt for the twins.

I see... so it'll run with the SMA. thanks for the info.
But that begs the question, is "softer" better? Will performance be better or worse than the 89-L? (or no difference to be concerned about?)

You may see a slight drop in peak RPM's with the softer belt. Shouldnt be a huge concern for a trail sled.

I'm 80% lake, 20% trail.
Something tells me I should buy an 89-L. I'm thinking that's what it came with, that's what it should have. The sled's all stock except for 144 studs, so I'm just trying to figure out what's going to make it as happy as possible.
Yeah, it's minor, no doubt... but if it was your sled, what belt would you run? The SMA or the 89-L?

But the softer ones will not last as long, right?
