I have an 02 Viper that I intend to take the clutch in to the have it serviced and the 6 plastic sliders replaced when my new clutch puller comes in. In the mean time I have a question about something that just appears odd to me.
When I was running the sled with the belt off. I noticed that as I brought the rpms up to what I assume is the engagement point ( I don't have the hood on thus no tach) the clutch ( moving sheeve) seems to jump over just slightly then as the rpms go up it moves thru it's travel smoothly. When I let it returns to idle as the rpms come down the moving sheeve opens smoothly to a point of almost all the way out then it snapps open the rest of the way with a audible pop. Is this a sign of a problem i.e. bad bushings, sliders etc... or is this just the centrifical force overcoming the sping and maybe just being dirty??. I'd like to order any parts I need (bushing / sliders) ahead of time so they're there when I bring the clutch in. Any help / advice would be appreciated. Thanks Gil

spinning a clutch up with no belt will tell you nothing about the condition of the clutch and is probally the most DANGEROUS and clutch destroying thing you can do.the only way to check what you need is to take it apart clean it and check clearences against the specs.

I really didn't think of that! I just noticed it when I was bleeding the cooling system after adding a rear cooler. When my puller comes I intend to take the clutch in to the dealer and have them disassemble it and clean and inspect everything. I just noticed the symptom and was curious about what would cause that. Thanks for the info. Gil

While I agree, running the clutch without the belt is a quick way to crack and possible grenade it i can assure you the behavior you are describing is typical. It is due to the shape of the weights and compounding spring rates.

Thanks Snopax. Like I had said I'm gonna bring my clutch in for disassembly (as I don't have the means to remove the spider) cleaning and replacement for atleast the plastic sliders. Gil
