Looking for advice on a basegasket. I just installed it back in august. Just recently blew a head gasket over the pto cylinder. Had to take the high off to flush the case. Is it safe to reuse the base again. Looks to be in great shape.

I would think it "should be fine", however if you have a relationship with "Murphy" like me, For $25 bucks I would just use a new one and not have it worry me for the whole season. I assume you had assembled the motor and ran it up to temp(seated the gasket) before it blew the head gasket??
I know everytime I tried to save some money like this on a fairly cheap but important part, it's usually made me sorry or atleast it bugged me until I made it right! Gil

why would you take the cylinders off, if you are just changing a blown head gasket? i'm confused here.

Mopar:
Removed jugs to make sure no water made it past the rings and into the case. Also had to check the condition of the rods and thrush washer free play. The gasket failed while she was at idle and hydro locked the engine. She hit pretty hard, had to make sure nothing was bent.

Ok gotcha

I have used many srx base gaskets over with never a problem long as there decent yet.Get some copper gasket spray from Napa auto or a a similar store.Spray the gaslet on both sides it's like a tacky material and re use the gasket.Basck years ago on the beginning of this site people use to do that with no problem.

Whatever u do, do NOT use an aftermarket base gasket. Long story short, my srx was never the same after a blow up & rebuild. I just last week took it apart for some other reasons & measured the gasket thickness, it is .025" thick, after being compressed for 2 seasons. no wonder it seemed sluggish. Yamaha base gaskets are .010" compressed. This was a Winderosa brank gasket.

That's right jeff. Winderosa gaskets are thicker than stock and are also paper instead of coated metal.

winderosa gasket

I just noticed this post on these winderosa gaskets. I just installed one on mine then came across this post. i really do not want to take back apart as i just got done torq in everything down. Is it just a little loss of power or is it a possible issue with leaking down the road? If it is just power can i just take out one of the three head gaskets to make up for the difference in the .025 v.s. .010. I really do not want to take back apart but if it is that big of an issue them i will. any imput would be great.

i had one of the aftermarket brand base gaskets on my viper and it lowerd each cylinder 8-10 psi. this was also with running an opticool head gasket and also lowerd the psi. for the $20 i would order a new stock yamaha gasket. then at least you have peace of mind with your rebuild.

I used the Winderosa Gaskets on an srx I had before, I ended up braeking down. When I took apart the engine, the gaskets was damagaged where the holes are for the coolant flow. It broke like it was pushed by finger to match the groove on the crankhousing where the coolant flows through the cyliner blocks and heads.

On a viper it might not have same effect as the holes are bigger on the viper, I think. This is the reason why people recommend using srx base gasket on a viper, slows down the flow for better cooling. Just don't quote me on this as I am still learning.

so it sounds like the paper style gasket is just breaking down possibly from the coolant flow and letting more flow through and letting the engine over heat???Thanks for the replies.
