1998 VMAX 700 Triple Mag Cylinder Burndown..what parts do I need?

Hi,

We detonated the mag side cylinder on my wife's 1998 VMax Deluxe XTC last year.

I paid $2300, and want to fix and sell.

So tell me what else I need besides this:

(1)Piston
(2)Rings
(3)Circlips?
(4)Wrist Pin?
(5)Gasket set?

Not sure about the circlips, wrist pin or gasket set..or even what exactly they do lol..
 
Well it also depends on why you had the melt down....

dirty carbs=carb clean
seal leak=new seals

Good luck. It looks like you have all the engine parts identified
 
Check the cylinder walls also for damage. May just need to be honed out alittle or they might be just fine.
 
Cylinder Walls were gouged

Cylinder walls were gouged so I have to send that for a replate..

This sled probably had dirty carbs, I trusted the dirty bastard I bought it from who said he had them cleaned preseason..should have known better..

As far as the air leak..how do I test for that? Also..the top of the piston was pretty hammered and cracked..how do I make sure no debris in bottom end?

x2 Unless you fix the problem that caused it to go bang in the first place it will most likely happen again. Some pics would help to understand the cause better.

You will need to do a leak down test after the motor has been rebuilt BEFORE you run it to be sure its not the seals.

Picture

Here is a picture from the front of the sled. The crown was chipped. Head and piston took a beating. Gouge in cylinder. I will post more pics soon. Thanks again for the help...

Cylinder ordered, piston ordered, what about the bottom end?

Okay,

I ordered an SPI piston set, with piston, wrist pin, circlips, and rings..

I also ordered a wrist pin bearing, OEM.

The replated cylinder is on its way...

However the head is all beat up..take a look at the picture...can I repair this head? Or do I have to order a new head too?

In reinspecting the damage, looks like a piece of a ring and edge of the crown were involved...only damage in cylinder sleeve is above the exhaust port...so hoping nothing in bottom end/crank..

How can I check for sure? Don't know anything about opening up the bottom end and what to do...will a magnet back and forth by the crank pickup any debris to know if I have anything on bottom end?

The problem is bits of ring etc get embedded in the head, the hot and cold cycles of the motor can cause them to come out and killing the motor again.

You dont know weather this is the cause or the result of something else.

You can check for sure by taking it apart and cleaning/inspecting properly. Or you can fart around with a magnet/air line etc etc untill the cows come home, the problem being if something is lodged in there you wont get it out with air or a magnet, it will come loose half way up the mountain and kill the motor, again.

ln your shoes i would pull the whole thing apart and go through it properly, as unfortunately for you you don't really know its true previous life. f you put it back together without stripping/cleaning/inspecting/repair etc its highly likely the same thing that happened to you will happen to the poor sod you sell it to. lts probably not want you want to hear, but there you are. ;) Good Luck

Any tech guides on taking the case apart and inspecting the crank?? The rod attached to this piston looked good but the wrist pin bearing took a beating so I ordered a new one..
