I am seriously thinking about picking up a mono shock skid here and am wondering about the necessity of the mounting brackets to put this in my SRX;do I need them or can I use something else?

Mounting brackets are just reinforcing pieces of metal. The factory ones did get engineered to withstand the expected forces the skid will transfer to the mount points. But just use common sense and design your own. I like 6061 aluminum, others like stainless steel, and chrome moly. As long as you don't get too thin the aluminum is fine, just got to watch that the holes don't egg out. One of the key purposes of the bracket is to spread the shock force across a wider spectrum of the tunnel so that it doesn't buckle. 6 -10 inches is enough for most brackets.

I used stainless on 3 skid swaps. I don't think i'd use aluminum, as the stock pivot mounts are not made of alum. I just put a moni in a srx this week, went pretty good. Not to bash or put anybody down, to each thier own, if u do a search on this swap, I would not do what 03viperguy did. Just mount a plate in there between the top & bottom plates.
