I bought a 98 SRX about a month ago.
I brought it home and decided to take some things apart and adjust them.
I took off the exhaust, air box, carbs, and cleaned the power valves.
Now the engine seems to have a rattle noise to it. I think I have gone over everything and cant figure it out.
- I looked though plug holes and pistons look ok
- I can spin engine over at the primary clutch and it makes no noise
What could be this problem.... I think it is coming from cylinder 1 or 2..... I ran engine with each plug wire disconnected and the noise is still there....
HELP!

If you did the powervalves then I'm wondering two things. First did you put them back in correctly (the power valves have two different bevels and it's possible to get them in upsidedown)? And secondly, did you adjust them? If you poke around in the Tech section of this site there's a lot of great info that will make your life a lot easier if you haven't already looked. Not knowing the answers to the above, I'm guessing your adjustment is off.
The first thread under the SRX, Viper thread is a link to Frequently Asked Questions. As you go down you will run into a collection of threads on Power Valves with pictures and instructions. Actually I would go there first. Then you could go to the Tech section and look at that also.
Here's another question: Did it sound this way before your adjusting?
I'm still thinking it's most likely a powervalve issue.

if you could get a video that you can hear the rattle in, that might help too. an old mechanic trick is to take a piece of hose, hold one end to your ear and move the other end around the engine and try to pinpoint the source. that might help you narrow it down too. just dont get it tangled in the clutch lol.

It could be the primary clutch weights rattling as well...I use the hose technique all the time on all my equipment to find noises...works good.
When the carbs are badly out of sync it can cause the engine to idle very rough trigering the clutch weights to rattle more then usual.

I also have a rattle noise on my 600 last year.Sure seems like it may be engine..especially after the engine rebuild. But motor ran great all last season.I narrowed it down to a noise from the pull start.Took it apart but found nothin broke or loose.Oh well I said..just keep riding and nothing has blown on the motor.

How many miles are on this sled? A lot of times engines with high miles will have excessive cylinder to piston skirt clearance which can make noise especially when the engine is cold.
check your front heat exchanger, i had one of the protecter's come loose and was making all kinds of weird noises,

Correction: second thread instead of first.

Where is this at on the sled? ( I am only aware of the exchangers on the side of the frame) How do I fit it?
Thanks

It is right at the front of the track, there is a cooler there with 2 guards on it
I see/feel nothing loose near front heat exchanger. I adjusted the power valves per the article on the home page and maybe its a bit quieter?
Do the power valves make some extra noise?
Do the power valves make some extra noise?
Shouldn't unless the springs are busted.
I would also check to see if all your springs holding your exhaust system are there. I'm guessing that could cause some ratteling. Maybe even weak springs. Not owning an SRX I have no idea how many there are.

Have you checked the bracket that bolts to the silencer, the rivets maybe loose there?

Does the rattle change with changes in your rpm?
Noise is a light tick/rattle. Heard at idle. Its there when you rev it up too, but its a light noise and other noise trumps it. All exhaust springs are there.
There were no obvious broken powervalve springs.... I will take a closer look

check clutch springs for a break or rollers or weight issues.
