After my engine swap from '98 xtc 600 twin to '01 600 venture tripple my xtc gauges went crazy, Speedo worked but Tach reved to the moon....

I bought the original gauges from the Venture....

No Tach....

I have every single part from the Venture now under my hood except e-start and reverse..... the tach wont work...

I got a wire harness from an '01 SXR because I removed the plugs for e-start from the Venture harness, thought maybe I clipped something important.....

Swapped the entire harness AGAIN....

Still no Tach.....

I got another known good SXR Tach thinking they were different somehow....

STILL NO TACH!!!!!!

PLEASE HELP!!!!

then it must be an issue with the CDI.Try swapping another in there to see.You have to find the wire from the CDI that sends that signal and take a tester and see what it shows. If it shows something..you would think a jumper wire from there to the tach should work..mine did.Otherwise take that Tach to another SXR sled and plug it into the harness and see if will work there.Either the Tach's are not in working order or the CDI output for Tach isn't working. You have to eliminate these factors to find out.If you know someone with a 600 SXR..simply swap components to see if they work on it and visa versa..something has to show up...

I already tried the jumper idea.... thats the second reason for getting a new wire harness, I had a barrel connector inches from the CDI that could cause issues in the future... I want to actually figure out what the problem is.

If the CDI was bad it would have other issues, the 600 twin tach wouldn't register anything either...

I'm thinking it might be regulator or rectifier issue but I'm sick of guess and check.... hopeing one of our electrical gurus sees the thread here instead of on the sx/vmax pages where we were discussing this.....

Any Ideas guys???

Does anyone second the CDI theory???

......I guess the CDI and Rectifier are the only 2 things I haven't replaced...... what the heck, might as well..... LOL

anyone???

Is there anyone out there???

I thought this thread would be on at least page 2 by now, page 3 even..... where is everyone???

Well as usual a trip to AmatoSRX's Yamaha Showroom can solve all things Yamaha!!!

I took one of my Tachs with me to pick up some parts this weekend, while waiting for a batch of parts to come out of the Powder Coating oven we started testing it on sleds from different eras and comparing the differences.

The Tach wouldn't work on an '01 system with 2 Condensors so we tried it on a '98.... It worked!!!

I remember discussing there being a Condensor in the wiring diagram but nowhere to plug it in...... racking my brain, I thought I remembered the Venture having it mounted with the fuse block and solonoid for the E-Start so I wired the condensor to the spare white triangular plug by the stator plug...... and IT WORKS!!!!!

IT'S ALIVE!!!!

As usual I spent months and months trying to figure it out...... spent an hour at Pete's Paradise come home and try one thing and it's fixed!!!

Thanks 1,000,000 Pete!!!!!!!

other special thanks:

Sxr700bandit for providing me with a good copy of a wiring diagram

bluemonster1 for help with creative ideas and helpful work arounds to help save my sanity

tomseal6 for brainstorming with me and helping keep me headed in the right direction.

edunn69 for tracing wires and helping with the way Yamaha intended things to be.

yeah...... I knew that thing seemed important......

good thing Pete's sleds are put together right! LOL

The really cool thing is I now have a SXR/XTC/Venture...... Frankenstein Sled

Yeah that would make perfect sense. An ER equipped sled will NOT have a smoothing condenser, as the battery acts as the smoothing condenser (hence why the tachs/clusters on viper ERs go gonzo when the battery croaks) and the non ER/ES sleds have smoothing condensers to prevent electrical spikes. Congratulations chief, I followed your triumphs and disappointments with your sled over the past season. Now that she's all dialed in and reliable, you are going to receive the greatest award of all; a dependable, good riding, trouble free sled for years of enjoyment.

glad to see I can help u with this nightmare sled u got. I like to help people and make things correct. see ya soon Travis. I spent 12 hours today working on my sleds and 3 friends we over working on theres.

12 hours in the garage Pete..... you must have gone to bed early, you should have stayed up and done more than just changing chaincase oil snow will be here soon! LOL

Thanks for all the encouragement guys; I sure hope I get to ride instead of wrench this year!!! Seems that every time a trip up north comes around or we have a great snow fall Frankenstein goes down and costs me another grand!!!
