I keep hearing that 98 srxs have crank problems. mine has 5500 miles and goes great made a lot of people mad that a old sled bets there 800s haha. but i would have thought it wuld have gone by now or maybe its been welded. i there anything i can look for to see if anyone has been in there without taking it apart?

I believe you can check with your dealer to see if your vin shows if it has been done as a warranty issue..
if you made it this far, its been repaired. no tell tale signs and yamaha doesnt have history any more in their database.
your dealer may have records, mine did, but i am the original owner and the replacement was done by my local dealer where the sled was purchased.

thats what i was think i shoulf be fine. i traded my zrt for it lat year with no track and 5 holes in the front exchanger. kid had it on a stand and hit the throttle track blew. so i fixed everything and love the sled wuld never go to cat again. im addicted haha
