Installed at 1 1/4 track on my 02 viper and it looks like its too close to the front heat exchanger protector. is this common?

Yes, depending on what track you will need to trim the lugs at the track windows where they hit the protectors. Dont just let them wear in. Otherwise everything else will be fine.

I really do not want to notch the track. When you removed the protectors were you able to do it with the track in? I am not running studs

I saw a video on youtube of a guy who sharpened the back edge of a reciprocating saw blade to a knife edge. He used a piece of flat stock up against the lug to keep his cuts straight. The back edge of the blade went thru the lugs like butter.
Just to clarify, I would just cut the lugs that will contact the protectors.I really do not want to notch the track. When you removed the protectors were you able to do it with the track in? I am not running studs

It amounts to about 2 pencil erasers worth per row on the track. 4 pieces per row, each piece about .25 x .125 Took me about 15 minutes.

Its easier and cheaper to cut the lugs then to decide later you wana stud and have to tear it down to replace the protectors.

X2 - from what I've read it's a real PIA to re-install the protectors.
I and others have used tile nippers to trim the lugs.
