Hi Guys

I have a 1996 Yamaha Vmax 500 2-up sled. Sled overall runs great. I run it every weekend to get to and from the cottage. Last year the electric start worked flawlessly right until the end of the season. I turned the sled off via the key and could never get the electric start to work again. The battery is fine and the manual pull start will work, once manually pull started, the sled runs great. The key is completely dead, does not seem to send any power to the starter. Where is the best place to start looking for the problem with the electric start?

Thanks for all your help Chris

Check at the starter relay first, see if the fuse is good then if you have voltage on the load side when turning the key. If you are good there, you will have to check voltage at the starter motor when turning the key. If you have voltage all the way to the motor and it doesn't turn over then the motor is bad.

x2 on what edunn69 said. i have seen worn out ignition switches casue this too. but the way he said to test it is the best.

electric start

Same thing happened to my 98 venture last year. E start just quit but machine would start will pull cord. turned out to be negative power cable from battery to starter. Right where cable connected to bottom of starter(ground) it had rusted off. Could check there if relat proves ok. Good luck. Troutman
