I have a 97 sx 700 I'm working on. I know these motors had a problem with something in the recoil area coming loose, Then zinging aroung & breaking the cases/ recoil housing. I would like to check over & locktite whatever it is that is the problem.

Pull the recoil and lock-tite the bolts that hold the recoil cup on... that was an update in like 98.

thank you.
I I don't think it was the bolts coming loose, but the ring itself stretching and eventually breaking and taking out the cases. Seems to happen on sleds with higher mileage.6k plus.

anybody know what it was for certain ?

I am 99% sure its the bolts on the starter cup. I will look at my Tech Book on Monday and double check.
I had a 97 SX & I know for sure that the ring gear bolts would come loose for the electric start. To correct the problem locktight them & re-torque.

That is also a problem on the unit with Electric start but thats a different problem.
On my 97, When it happened, I want to say all the bolts were still tight. The ring itself that is bolted to the flywheel came apart. Over time It gets stretched and broke in one spot and then spun around inside of there like a knife and broke the cases. I could definitely see how if all the bolts came out except one, How it would do the same thing. Check both, stretch on the ring and making sure the bolts are tight with good loctite on them.

The Bulletin is S97-001 for the Recoil Starter Pulley Bolt Failure. Still looking for the starter ring gear issue... If you have electric start I would remove those bolts as well and red loc-tite them.

No E.S. Should i replace the ring with a newer one. I have a few SRX rings, maybe I'll see if they r the same. Then loctite everything.

If you dont have ES then you dont have a ring gear on the clutch.

I meant the ring that is bolted to the flywheel, That the recoil dawgs hook onto. I thought that is what was breaking.

Well, got recoil removed tonite & found the ring that bolts to the flywheel has 2 cracks in it. Soooo glad I looked at it, cuz when they let go it's a disaster. Anyway, thats what I found, no loose bolts, although I will be loctiting them all just because. Thanks for everybody's input.
