I was pulling the pair of carbs for some cleaning. When removing the airbox I notice the coarse sponge used in the top plastic frame of the airbox is very brittle and some areas seperated from the ribs of the mount. I believe some bits of sponge debri has already been sucked into the carbs and I should replace or repair the existing one. Its a pretty thin sponge that is used and not normally seen around.

Has anyone done anything to there intake sponge filters? I have no idea what a dealer would charge for this but likely a lot more than its worth.

Can you post a pic. Is it the one in the hood or the one that snaps on the box?? The hood one can be tossed unless you boon-dock and the box cage and sponge should be replaced or repaired as long as you can get good air flow and not have that garbage sucked in the air box.

Its the one on the air box where it snaps on. There is one on the hood and looks fine.

I brought it home with me. I get a photo and post it here later.

Thx

I'd say replace it. They are just over $20 new but you might find one if you post in the wanted section.

I will have to do something for sure. I don't want that foam ending up in the engine anywhere. Its not sturdy filter and fairly open and may be for keeping big stuff out of the airbox. I check for mice but they'd not been in there but did summer in the handle bar cover and made quite the mess. I will now leave it off entirely after the winter. It just another place for mice to curl up nice and cozy.

Ahhh, I checked with my dealer and was sitting down. OMG... >$56. I will rebuild it thank you very much or do without since there is intake on the hood as well that is filtered. 20 bucks is one thing but not what they want. No way!!!!

I found it thru on line parts site for $21.45..of course shipping would be added..so becomes about the same as dealer.Get in touch with NickyTech(member on Here) his site is Snowmoyard.com. He has great prices on used stuff..PM him and tell him bluemonster1 sent ya......He just shipped me brake parts today and am waiting for them now.

I ordered one tonight. Yamaha MSRP is $59. Got 10% off. I plan on taking the old one off and putting it on the SX after rebuilding it. Any suggestions for filter material?
