Ok, So I have a 2003 yamaha vmax and a 2000 sxr and they both have the chain case oil drain in the tunnel. I was going to change the oil on our old vmax 600 but I cannot seem to locate the plug. I see a big bolt in the tunnel area but it does not appear to be the correct one. I have searched the forum but I have yet to figure it out. Does anyone happen to know where it is?
Thanks
Rodney

get onto a yamaha parts fiche and it should show the plug for your year and model.

can't see one in the fiche..maybe the older model requires you to take the cover off completely to drain the oil..get a lot of rags placed under the case.

maybe one day whenever you have to remove the chaincase completely..why don't you drill and tap drain plug in there.Just order a plug and washer from a newer model and match the threads to cut..done deal. You probably will have to drill a hole in the tunnel area for the bolt to stick out and for you to get to it.

I went down to the barn to have another look. The parts list shows a bolt and seal on the front of the chain case under the hood but it looks like the bolt is on the perimeter and I am not sure if it would have a leak path.

saw that also..makes no sense it is that high up..maybe the guy on assembly line drilled all the drain plugs in the wrong location back then...lol

There is a bolt on the bottom of the cover for the drain and one higher up which is the "fill" hole. Basically you pull that bolt out, drain it, then fill it back up until gear oil starts coming out the "fill" hole. Put the bolt back in and call it a day.
Oh there is a small hole for it to drain out underneath as well.
