What do you guys think about using somthing like this? http://www.shadetreepowersports.com...an2=N&ordMan3=N&persCode=&persReqd=&persLink= &shipRemaining=0&daysBetween=0&daysBetweenFix=0&monthsBetween=0
My electric shield cord is already hardwired and fused to battery. I know the wire looks to be about 22 gauge which will hold a 5amp draw by looking at charts online. I will be running a electric shield and GPS off of it and from my testing the shield is about 1.6 amps and the GPS less then 1 so less then 3amps together. This looks cool because i will not need my GPS all the time and thought this would be very nice cause i just plug this into my heated shield cord and can run both when needed. Then when not using i dont have a big cigarette adapter to worry about? My question is do you think the wire is big enough for the load? I dont mind wiring up a seperat cigarette adapter just came across this in all my online searching and though it would be a cool idea. Any thought from the electrical guy's!! My electrical knowledge is very weak so any help is great.

I think I'm going to try one of those. Thanks for doing my searching, one click and I found what I need.

Just remember that your RCA heated shield plug has to be to a dc 12v and not a ac 12v. Your heated shield is designed to work on both. If you plug anything ment for dc and your running ac goodby gps/phone. Must go to battery or one of the few dc wires on the sled. A search will tell ya which is ac/dc.

It should handle to load.
The thing that would concern me is having the adaptor bounching around when riding.
FWIW - I bought an additional power cord for my GPS and chopped off the cigar lighter end and hardwired it to the sled with just the pigtail coming out where the GPS is mounted. (as pictured below with my old Garmin plus-3 mount).
I also monitor batt voltage on the GPS display to ensure it's being powered by the sled (roughly 13.2 13..

Thanks for the tips. I think im getting this all together now! LOL! I dont get the Garmin nuvi 500 till x-mass so i dont get to play with my mount ideas till then. As soon as i get it mounted and all the kinks worked out ill post some pics and see what everyone thinks.

I think you have to be careful when doing this. Don't some GPS units actually run on 3.6V or something? I think the Cigarette lighter plug steps down the voltage? The one that I was thinking of was a Lowrance H20. My brother cut the end off it and hard wired. After he plugged it in, the unit shorted out.
When I had my SXR I zip tied the cigarette lighter recepticle to the speedo cable under the hood to keep everything tied down. On my Viper, i mounted the cigarette lighter right to one of the the handlebar yoke bolts under the pad.

The garmin does step down the voltage through the end of the cigarette adapter so i will be keeping that for sure and using that adapter pluged into the helmet cable. I am going to do what you did and zip tie it to the handlebars under the pad. It should stay secure and safe under there.
