so i went to pull my 2001 sxr 600 out from storage and start it and after trying to pull start it for quite some time i pulled a plug and pulled it over to see if there was spark and there wasnt anything. (tried all three cylinders). wondering if someone can tell me where to start looking first to fix it.

Like Stagg said. Mice love those wires. Easy to check under your handlebar pad. They got mine this year. Chewed up my handwarmers and heated shield wires. PIA! start simple first.

if it isnt the wires how do you get the rust off the stater

a rusty stator won't do it... a failed stator will, no way to clean it, you just replace...

But first, there are lots of other tests to do before you jump in to replace a stator.

I had a similar thing happen on my SXR a few years back. Ended up needing the stator/flywheel rust cleaned off the 3 spark points....not sure what they are called.

The corrosion was killing the spark....basically the recoil needs to come off and I believe you will also need to pull the flywheel to get to it. Sorry but it's been a while since it was done on my sled.

Did you check it with a spark tester light? PIA to see a tiny spark on a plug. I always use my light when I'm checking, so much easier.Try new plugs? Wires under pad, wires out of ignition switch? Start with the easy stuff first. operate kill switch up and down. turn key on/off. etc. Maybe some corrosion on contacts. Coil wiring good? Check harness really good (what you can see). Harness needs to be pulled to check every inch of it. May be a rub through somewhere. (Do a search on rub through you'll find all kinds of info.) All electrical connectors plugged in?
Let us know what you find.
