1988 vmax 540 problems now

Now that I have Tony and Opsled posting on here which are both great resources I need a little help on this vmax 540. Someone put a 81 srx stator on this thing with bad wiring so i took all of that off and put the newer style stator on (85? and up) with the individual wires. One of the cylinders were scored so i replaced that, it got hot last year and cold seized on me and later let loose and still ran great haha, but i tore her down this year. I may need new floats and/or needles?? I have the jet needle clip at the middle point im going to drop it today and see where that puts me and adjust the floats....For a few pulls i didnt have spark until i played with the switches so maybe theres a problem there....
 

WOW, YOUR KILLING ME. THE 81 STATORS WERE CHANGED WITH THE CASE UPDATES. THE 81 WIRING HARNESS AND CDI HAD TO BE USED BECAUSE AGAIN I DON,T HINK IT WILL MATE TO THE VMAX 540. SO YES YOU NEED TO MAKE AFEW CHANGES. AGAIN THOUGH, I MAY BE WRONG. 3:16 (yammie tony)

Ya i took all that bull-ish out of there but now im having problems with it running rich I dropped the needles to second from the top and raised the floats a touch. I could be getting rich from it not sitting level on the ground? Some idiot took the shut off values out and took the fuel pump off im wondering if i have a bad CDI because sometimes it runs ok and then sometimes it doesnt. It also has that stupid set up where the oil injects into the nipple on the top of the intake i dont know why people cant leave stuff stock. Come to think of it im wondering if its just getting too much oil it has a 83 or an 84 motor in it ill back the oil injection off a but because it seems real rich...
 
MY 1983 RUNS PERFECT ONLY WHEN THOSE FACTORY FUEL SHUT OFFS ARE OFF. THIS SLED WILL FLOOD IF THEY ARE LEFT OPEN. FORGET RAISING BACK OR EVEN TRAILING IT. I MEAN IT WILL FLOOD SO BAD I AM TALKING LOCK CRANK CASE, FLOODED PIPES, GAS SHOOTOUT OUT OF PLUG HOLES etc. YAMAHA ADDED THOSE FUEL SHUTOFFS FOR THAT REASON. IF YOU LOOK AT THE 540 VMAX, YOU CAN see PROBLEM. THE MOTOR SITS LOW IN THAT SLED. 3:16 (yammie tony)
 
stator fixed TONE

Tony stator is set back STOCK carbs im trying to set stock, im wondering if that crank seal behind the water pump housing is cooked....It could just be flooding from sitting also, someone took the fuel shut-off valve off and i put it up on the stand it sits with the back tilted up..

Ill put the skis back on and the hood and bring it outside on a stand and run it for a bit ....But ive been having this problem were gonna check the voltage coming out of the wires tonight (neighbor is a diagnostic electrician) which is sick does all my electrical and im gonna swap the fuel pump.
 
You said you replaced the stator to a 85-up but what CDI does it have on it . The 87-up take a different Stator, CDI, & flywheel. They uped the voltage on the 87-up so if you are using the 85 with the smaller charging coil & the CDI from the 88 then there may not be enough voltage for that newer CDI to work properly the 83-86 CDI should begin with 8U9, and the 87 up should start with 83H. Also check the TORS switches and even bypass them to see if your problem goes away. If you need the carb jetting specs let me know as I have them for the 88.

Ya what Jeff and Tony said. Sounds like you have a messed up sled. Untill you get and know that you have all the correct, compatable parts on it trying to diagnose is a crapshoot.

Thanks, lol Ive put a 81 srx stator on my 86 max and it worked great better then stock...Ive even heard of guys putting 81 srx stators on all the vmax year models because they dont have a rev limiter.
 
The 83 carbs only had a plastic washer under the clip, 84-up had one on bottom & top and the plate under the spring was screwed to the slide. This was done to help keep the needle centered in the needle jet and help stop some erratic fuel delivery.

Well its confirmed, someone threw a greanade under the vmax 540 when i wasnt looking, upon closer inspection clutch side seal blew completely off and the crank is bent, awesome!!!!!!!! Oh ya and the frenchmen that owed it before me put a steal needle jet with the seat that came out of a skidoo, he probably wasnt used to a machine running that well so he had to throw in the parts to make it run the way he's used to.
