Forgot about this last year but every time I get in deep snow (not even deep enough to go over the hood), my sled just dies down. It doesn't stall but has 0 power and I have to wait for a bit and then try and go again.

Only way to go through a field full of snow is if I follow someone.

Every where else, the sled runs fast and has no troubles.

Any thoughts?

I think there was a deflector installed on Mtn. Maxs for this reason. I think there is a deflector on my 121" '01 SRX although I think it isn't as large.

Maybe someone pulled it off when installing the can... if the '98s had one?

i found a couple of threads here referring to a thread called "Infamous powder bog" but can not find it anywhere.

There was a lot of discussions about the exhaust deflector and then sealing up around the head light etc.. Anyone know where that thread went?

Going to look in to this further....

Thanks guys

not sure where it goes but i know if u go in deep snow all srx bogg...never try a deflector and it seem like if u open up the hood a little in help to let the humidity to go out and not go into the air box ........................ but betetr like to stay in trail with it

"the infamous powder bog" thread is in the mountain sleds section.

Get an exhaust deflector if you don't have one...one from a Mnt. Viper should be able to be riveted on. Then something like SLP flo-rites in the dash and block underhood air from getting to the air box, so it only takes cold air from the dash. I'd have to look at my cousin's '98 Mnt SRX to see what needs done exactly, but on my Viper the air box already "sealed" to the hood, they just had a bunch of openings that would still let air through the gaps around the headlight area, etc. Blocking those off and putting in the flo-rites solved my bog problems.

My mtn viper has the exhaust guard. I've had it in some real deep snow with no bog and it's stock.

exhaust gaurd will help, had it happen with my 600 in deep snow we had years back.Once I installed a homemade one,I was able to run deep 2 to 3 feet powder snow after..mind you had snow flying over the hood to..lol

look for the deflector from the 03 mtn viper or 2000 and up mtn max. no need for the backing plate, just the deflector. part #8ED-2194H-00 is what i have used, compare that to the mtn viper part number and take your pic. next issue to resolve will be the cooling of the center pipe when dipping the nose.

Seems to be only the triple piped sleds that have this issue. The shroud over the factory pipe helps to keep the powder that gets through the hood vents from turning to steam when hitting the pipe and being slurped into the air box.
Like snowdad said, snow hits the center pipe and cools it, plus the resulting steam into the air box.

kinda funny, my brother and I have the exact same sleds (98 srx) and mine does it and his doesn't !@#%**!. Mine right now is shoking me through my brake lever(gloves wet and sled covered in snow) Had to wrap tape on lever to get home.

Sounds like it's time to check your main harness that runs under the motor, something is going to ground...
