does anyone know if the bearing behind the large gear in the chaincase on a 03' viper should have the sealed side faceing the oil or sealed side faceing the coggs?

Correct me if I'm wrong guys, but I would think sealed side towards cogs & bearing open to oil. You could try looking at a parts micro fiche also.

ya that is what i thought to open side of bearing gets lubed by chaincase oil. but i read on another post that it is sealed side faceing oil to prevent metal shavings from getting into the bearing.

By yamaha specs, and the way it come from the dealer it is actually seals to the inside and open bearing to drivers. But they are protected by the driver seals. Do a search and guys run them both ways, seals on the outside, no seals you name it. But from the factory the seal is on the inside. Theroy is the seal keeps out any little pieces of metal that might find its way to the bearing. Like when you pull the magnetic dip stick and it has little flakes of metal on it. So its your choice but i stick to seals on the inside just how it came from the factory. chris

Anybody run the bearing with both seals? The bearings I am putting in have seals on both sides. Should I leave them both or take the one side out?

open one of them seals up or else that bearing will not get much lube and eventually dry out...I have all my bearings open to the chain and closed in the back towards motor.Never had a problem for years. If you want proof that bearing will be good for years..take a look at that small bearing that is on the actual chain case cover, I have never changed mine and it is still solid...
