i've noticed that the oil consumption has gone up on my 01 700sxr. it uses over half a tank of oil to a tank of gas. assuming that the cable is in specs, what else could cause this problem?
There is a possibility of the pump going bad... How many miles? You may want to double check the setting on the pump just to be sure. Have you had anything apart to possibly have the oil pump out of adjustment? also If you ride at or close to full throttle your going to use more oil.
Check to make sure that the cable is still seated, if it comes out it will use oil fast. If that is good, it could be the pump is going bad.

Have you added a riser? I added a 2" riser and got the same effect a couple years ago. I rerouted the cables and all was good after that.

its got a little over 5000 miles on it. no riser, and the cable is within specs. pretty hard on the throttle though. i'm guessing that the pump is going bad. will it just use oil like crazy or just quit working all together?
They generally go full open when they fail, thus using more oil. Sounds like that is what has happened to yours.
