Well ive been working with this exciter sx since last year had it going amasing last season until i blew a head gasket then it was running fine and now crap again.......It keeps foiling the right side cylinder where the fuel pump connects....Last year it would run rich for about 5 seconds and clear out and run amasing everytime i rode it. I think im having choke and or carb troubles not sure.......Im gonna change out the pump and see where that gets me...I wonder if i messed up a cylinder?? But it seems to have good compression even though i dont have a good tester....On every sled my tester says 120psi??? How can i check the voltage when its running to see if a wire is bad or something because it was backfiring.....

It was doing the same thing today and the mag side cylinder had dark grey oil in it the sled is sitting up on the stand with the back end up abou a foot above the front not too high but could be the cause? And if the back end is up does that mean the fuel pump is leaking into the crank because the fuel tank is up higher? Also dont know how to set the floats....

re:

needle and seats looked good dont know if that means they are ok, the spring springs out and the needles rubber isnt cracked.....

You can check the pump by pulling the pulse line off the motor and seeing if there is an excessive amount of fuel in the line. You may have to get down and dirty and suck on the line to see if you can get some fuel out (or you could use a hand held vacuum pump) if you can get some to come out it would indicate a bad diaphragm on that side of the pump, I have had this problem. If there if no fuel most likely the problem is in the carb. The fuel pumps are very easy and cheap to rebuild if it is bad.

i reluctantly sucked on the line when the sled was sitting for a week or so when i was doing the carbs...and no gas but that was a week long not being started...could the needle and seats need replacing even if they look good? I tightened down the head 20 ft. for the 12mm bolts and 24 for the 14mm bolts. I didnt think it was enough so i went 24 ft. and 27 or something respectively. the first set is what the book called for but didnt seem to be enough, i just dont get it it ran last year great now its crap. Could the needles have gotten crappy from the new gas? This thing sat for about 8 years before i got it too.

I used to have a similar problem back in the day on one of my 650 Indys. When the sled sat for a while the fuel would leak thru the fuel pump and needle/seats and fill the engine with fuel.

Suggestions:

-clean carbs
-check adjust float levels
-check floats for leakage/binding
-replace both carbs float needle and seats
-replace fuel pump

I also added a fuel shut off to prevent carb flooding when sitting and trailering

So i took out the needles and seats they look ok and the orings look at could they look fine and be damaged? Or should i just replace them....

floats

how do i adjust the floats on this thing its like tuning a fighter jet not like the VM 38 roundslides nice and primative for me.

I'd start with new needle and seats. Had a similar issue with 38mm VM (as Bob mentioned) and even though the sealing surfaces appeared to look okay they would leak.
