Hay Tony.. I am going to look at a 1980 SRX 440 tomorrow night, there is a possibility that it is a Canadian version there is a big Canadian Yamaha dealer just across the bridge , how do I tell? The guy (and I have known him for years)says that the track is bad but the sled is in pretty good shape. He said the cowl is in great shape other then it is faded a little. The carbs are off but he has them. He also said that the oil injection is still there as well. I really want to keep the original butterfly carbs and oil injection, but my question is what to look for and what are the problems with these sleds . I don't know if it has the Yamaha or Comet clutch but either way could you tell me a good clutch set up for it? How would this compare to my 81 in performance, I remember driving a 79 years ago but that is the only experience that I have had with the early SRX's. Any info would be great..

HELLO JEFF AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS. YA THE THE GREAT 1980 SRX. WITHOUT A DOUBT ONE OF THE BEST LOOKING. THAT GOLD WAS AWESOME WHEN YAMAHA CAME OUT WITH THAT. NOW, AS FARR AS YAMAHA CANADA, I DON,T HAVE ANY NUMBERS, YAMAHA PREFIX HERE WAS 8K2 FOR THE 1980 SRX, buts thats a good point, the speed-0 will be in KPH. NOW THE 80 SRX WAS THE FIRST OIL INJECTED SRX, ALSO THE FIRST BUTTERFLY CARBED, OTHERWISE PRETTY SIMILAR TO THE 78-79, EXCEPT IN 1980 YAMAHA USED A DIFFERENT SKID FRAME TO TRY AND IMPROVE RIDE. HP WAS AROUND 78 AND NO WOULD NOT TAKE A 81 SRX. IF IT HAS A COMET CLUTCH ON IT I CAN SET YA UP WITH A GREAT CLUTCH SET-UP FOR IT. YAMAHA CLUTCH WAS VERY GOOD TO BUT NEED VERY HIGH MAINTENANCE. LET ME KNOW AND GOOD LUCK. 3:16 (yammie tony)

KPH on the speedo means nothing. They all were in 1980. US and Canadian. Don't know/never heard of, or if there was a difference in 80. Dono.
One of the best looking Yammies ever made. Wanted a new one in 1980. Didn't have the extra $1000. Settled for the Exciter. Loved it but,,,,,,,,,,,still want the SRX.
Tony has it covered. Couple of things I've seen on used ones. Gas tanks are usually broken at the cap latch (don't know why) and ones with good tunnels/pans are a rarity. If not bent and torn many will be faded to a dull light yellowish.
Good Luck,
opsled.

YA KNOW THE MORE I THINK OF IT, AND PHIL MAKES A GREAT POINT, MY 80 SRX WAS IN KPH ALSO. SO WHO KNOWS. ALSO THAT BELLY PAN, AGAIN PHIL RIGHT ON. NO REPOP AND ONLY ONE YEAR, SO VERY HARD TO REPLACE IF BANGED UP. PLACES OUT THERE THAT ARE MAKING THE STOCK DECALS. ANOTHER VERY RARE THING I SHOULD OF MENTIONED IS THOSE GREAT LOOKING SMOKED SRX WINDSHIELDS. ALSO VERY RARE. REPOP ONES ARE CLEAR AND BEND IN THE MIDDLE. 3:16 (yammie tony)

Correct me if I am wrong.... I was told that sleds from Canada and Europe had a different digit before the Vin number's digits ?

WOW, TRY AND FIGURE YAMAHA EUROPE. FIRST THE 82 SRX IS AS POPULAR OVER THERE AS A 81 IS HERE. THAN YOU HAVE THE 8H1 78 SRX THAT ALMOST A 77. THAN YOU HAVE A 81 SRX THAT LOOKS LIKE A 79/80. GOOD LUCK. 3:16 (yammie tony)

Jon B. told me the following a few years ago.
1982 SRX/Vmax RT499 in the USA all start with 8R9-001001
1982 SRX/Vmax Rt499 from Canada and Europe all start with 8R9-010101

Just got back from looking at the sled decided to pass on it. The hood was broken at the hinges, and the tunnel was broke & welded on the left side just between the gas tank and the front of the seat, also in the back just above the rear wheels. The engine had steel sleeves ( I probably was the one that put them in, I remember doing a few SRX''s for one of the local Yamaha dealers years ago when I worked in the machine shop.) the engine turned over and needed a good cleaning. If the tunnel was OK I would have gotten it, the funny part is under the front end the tunnel was OK. To bad, I was really looking forward to getting it.It was a US sled..

Vin numbers at european 80/81 srx440
European srx 440 80 mod starts at 8k6-15101
European srx 440 81 mod starts at 8k6-16101
The main differense between the European 80 and USA 80 is the breakwire, we here have a parkbreak at the trottlehand(right) and main breakhandle at lefthand, also another is the tip in front of skiis, have also a list around the windshield. there is also some minor differenses more.
The 81 european srx 440 was red where the 80 was gold, those oem stripes has prefix 8m3 if you se in the original partsmanual.
By the way: JON B, doesnt now all about the european 82 srx. And as i have understood there was only a public release in canada and in scandinavia. It did came 33 srx500 to Norway.
And the factory servicebook for srx 500 it is written that srx 500 started at vinnumber: 8R9-010101.(this sled excist in scandinavia)
So if it it was another versjon for usa then this book(service) will tell which number the srx500 had and if 8R9-001001 is correct.
And the vinprefix 8r9-010106(engine) and 8r9-010119(chassi) is in usa now, but sold as new sleds in Norway.
Hope this helped a little about the European versions,.,,
