Hey guys, new to the site just wanted to say a quick thanks for all the helpful posts I've been reading!
I ride a 2002 mm 700 and I've been toying with the idea of pulling the heat exchangers off of the running boards and mounting them inside the tunnel. I was just curious if anyone has done this or knows what kind of problems I'm going to run into? I'd like to do this and then run some better boards in place of the old running boards.
Any help would be great!

better effort would be to use polaris style edge coolers. minor hose routing and if your running a rear cooler as well as the oem front cooler, no heating issues if you ride mostly off trail. i had minor heat issues until the re- installation of the rear exchanger.

or a V cooler that mounts to the underside of the tunnel

Is it possible to run the stock coolers under the tunnel though? I know I can use other coolers but I figured if I could salvage the old ones I would. Im guessing there would be no durability issues as they already get beat on by snow and ice in their stock locations.

anythings possible. the 94-96 vmaxs and the exciters ran this location. you would need to cut the one side down that mounts to the inside of the tunnel now and perhaps re-configure the hose connections. only major hurdle i can foresee would be exiting the hoses at the front of the tunnel and re-connecting to the front cooler. some creative ingenuity may get the job done.
Another consideration, would be the width of the coolers and possible stud patern if you run studs. The 94-96 Vmax's coollers were skinny and mounted above the track windows, so most stud patterns didnt become an issue. The coolers actually worked as tunnel protectors for general stud penetration lengths.

I'm not running any studs so I'll be fine there. I think I've got plenty of room inside the tunnel. I'll tale a closer look tonight. Thanks for the help guys!

You will likely need to bend at least part of the mounting flange that goes up inside the tunnel to be used as a mount point. The other side already has mounting tabs of course. Clearance is key, and you could add protectors as they will get contact from the track. It would take quite a while for track contact to wear through, but if there is enough contact it will wear. Personally, I would look for some coolers off a parts sled (other brands and/or models) that were originally designed to mount inside the tunnel. Also, take a look at the V-coolers offered by Fabcraft, Van Amburg (sp?) and others.
I have seen pics of exactly what you are suggesting, so yes it can be done but there was a bit of fabbing needed.

While the running board coolers are a bit of a pain when you consider the damage potential and lack of ability with aftermarket running boards, they do keep your feet warm and you can always pile snow in the foot wells if the sled starts to overheat to cool it down.

Thanks for the tips guys. Had an old polaris edge chassis with a tunnel cooler in it but gave it away, wish I would have kept it now! I'll look into the aftermarket coolers and see what I can find.

the running board coolers will fit with some modifications, gotta weld some tabs to the edges so you can rivet them in

Snoprokidf6 have you personally done this?
