Question about titles for sleds. I've owned a couple sleds, but they were purchased through friends of the family , and never a title. The sled I just purchased was a CL find and a fifteen hundred mile round trip . Talked to a couple of guys at work and gathered most just received a certificate of ownership , rather than titles. I would appreciate any input on this matter.

depends on the laws for your state and the state where youre buying the sled.

for example; maine (where i'm at) is a non-title state for snowmobiles. we register ours with a hand-written bill of sales. so even if we buy a sled from a title state the title isn't needed. since there are no titles for maine sleds if a title state buys a sled from here there is a form the seller can get from the state of maine proving ownership so the buyer can register the sled in their state.

Titles for sleds

Thanks for info.Irronically enough I live in Ohio and the sled was purchased in Maine(hence the 1500 mile trip) . The guy I purchased from said the same thing and we typed out a bill of sale with sled vin etc. I'm just making sure I'm okay when sell time comes around. Thanks again .

Here in Michigan we just need the registration to go get our stickers. Never seen a title.

Yeah I have his old registration in the rear storage pouch , with my other sleds I just gave the BMV the vin off the sled and got my sticker, but should be ok thanks guys

Make sure you put that you paid far less on the affadavit. Ohio will send you a bill for sales tax! The bmv wont collect it on the spot. ;)!

Yeah right on, they got me with my Honda Sportbike when I purchased it out of state. The previous owner was a cop and didn't agree to lowering asking price on title transfer , so gave the BMV a different number than originally stated and got a letter in mail saying I owed another couple hundred in taxes- CROOKED as government ain't enough they get most our earned money at work need more. But yeah been there done that thanks again guys for repying .

not that I like paying taxes, but... how do you think those services are provided? People never want to pay taxes, but yet want the government to give them all kinds of services. Lying on the blank on the DMV registration is a pretty serious crime...

At least in my state, snowmobile title/registration is $45/year. $5 of that is for paperwork, $40 goes directly to local clubs, either as direct grants, or via grooming equipment loans. Getting out of paying just means the local clubs have trails that aren't maintained or built.
