Trying to trace down a low end ignition cut out, I decided to take another peek at some wires. Upon inspection I noticed a sign of problems. The larger plug coming out of the stator appears to be burnt to a crisp. I looked over the rest of the wiring and nothing else is crispy or appear to be wrong. I came here to get some input from you guys first. This is what I found.

Could be voltage regulator or the stator is bad.
Did the same thing to my dads viper today. Plug was fine but the wires were toast. Nothing left to them. Not sure what caused it though.
What does the voltage reg look like? Where does it live?
Could be a bad stator or could simply have been corrosion causing a poor connection which got very hot. The tester is your best friend now. Test out all of the components starting with the stator.
Another possibility is that the wire in the male end backed up in the plug.
Take a pic of the other plug end if you can.

my srx did the same a few years ago . i think its just a bad connection , bad connections make heat and burn things. i cut the plug off and made solid solider and heat shrink connections and have never had a problem since.
THIS IS WHAT MY WIRES LOOKED LIKE. WHERE IS THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR? CAN IT BE TESTED?

The plug being melted is from the blade connector being sloppy, pinch down the little tab and clean up terminal and plug. Smear some dielectric grease in the connector and reinstall ,it will be fine.(yamaha should have used the fancier connectors like on rest of connections instead of just blade ones in my opinion)
The burnt wire on the stator from other sled is just being from age and use.The elctric start models and others when you add a heated shield and other electrical options it makes it worse. You got 11,000 miles from it, you got your moneys worth!
