another srx stator problem solved.

OK, here is the problem, sled starts and runs but has a bad misfire at idel and will not pull rpm's on top end, done many clutch changes and 7900 is all it will do, after lots of testing it comes down to a bad stator, here are the findings---w/r-w/gr 204 ohms checks OK, brown/brown-red open should be 435, brown/red to black 85, checks OK,I cant belive it runs at all but it starts eveytime, I bought one on fee bay a week ago to have as a spare but now it looks like I need it.

well my spare stator showed up today and guess what? it checks out aprox.the same, what are the odds of this? someone chime in here that has more testing on these than me.

I ran into a problem last year that I chased for a long time. It would backfire when idling, wouldnt rev up to top rpms .People on here had me convinced it was electrical. Changed cdi, nothing ,changed stator , nothing, chased down every inch of wiring looking for a short, nothing, called a guy I know and got his opinion. First thing he said was do a compression check. Middle cylinder deader than a door nail. Zero compression. Pulled it a part, keeper on the wrist pin let go, wrecked the jug and piston. Start with basics.

I changed the cdi, nothing tried a differant coil pac nothing, new pistons and rings nothing swapped out the carb rack nothing, the open between the brown and the brown-red of the stator bothers me, anyone have a stator laying around they could check and see if this is common or are both these that I have bad?

I have a brand new stator and a stator from and engine with 1700 miles on it.

As soon as I get home from work tomorrow, I will test both of them and post the results.

If you don't hear back from me tomorrow, please post a reminder on this thread.

There seems to be some misprinted manuals out there including mine,I have another post asking for the values and got this reply,Pick up coil white/red-white/green 189-231 ohm
Source coil brown-brown/red 392-479 ohm
Source coil brown-red/black 77-95 ohm
Lightning coil yellow-black 0,23-0,28 ohm

I think it should be brown to black red 392-479 ohm.

I just measured the resistance values on a brand new (right out of the box) OEM stator and pickup coil. The resistance between the two wire for the pickup unit is 205 ohms. The resistance values between each of the 3 wires going to the stator are 0.5 ohms. These values are right in the middle of the specs in the service manual.

That does not sound right,so between brown/red and black it is .5 ohms? and between brown and black/red is also .5 ohms?

well it turns out that my problem was not the stator or the carbs or the coils or anything like that, the pto end has slipped and the crank is out of phase, yamaha welds all the rod pins but did not weld the centers that is where it moved, engine removal and total crank disassembly re time the crank and weld all the pins this time, everyone take not that if you are having any crank work done have the centers welded also.

There is no color coding on the three stator wires that go into the plug. They are all sleeved with a white plastic cover. The SRX manual states there should be approx. 0.5 ohms between any two wires. The only high resistance path is across the pickup coil.

I just had two cranks from 2000 SRX 700 engines serviced by Jeff at Midwest Crank. Each crank required some attention: large bearing replacement, conneting rod replacement. Jeff welded the center pin on each of these cranks for me. Yamaha welded the PTO and Mag cylinder pins at the factory, they should have welded all 3 pins to be complete.

Ok that is why the ohm readings are differant, mine is a 98, and yes yamaha welded only the connecting rods not the crank centers if you look very close you will see what I am talking about, there are two of these on a srx or viper crank and they can slip and make them out of phase, basickly I think anthing that can slip should be welded.
