That does look nice! I knew a guy that had one, Had it on a jack all summer and flooded the cyl's with gas. Went to pull it over in a hurry and bent a rod. So much for pre-start maint!

That looks really clean! How was the reliability on those 800 triples?

Not very good, but in the hands of a competent tuner they are very fast! Crank problems is the biggest issue that I've heard repeatedly over the years with those and all the doo triples.sxr70001 said:That looks really clean! How was the reliability on those 800 triples?

The biggest problem Doo has with their cranks is that they rely on some magic grease to keep the bearings lubed when all they really need to do is drill a hole and press a fitting into the base for an oil line.Apparently that is a popular mod on the Dootalk forums and it supposedly cures any crank bearing failures,go figure.

I had one of these for a couple years (thought that might of been mine when I opened the link). Was a great sled for me. Just my .02

As far as I've heard other then the problems with crank bearing failure due to bad seals and the resultant loss of the isoflex grease they are great motors and make good power. Also the sc series suspensions are easy to work on and update. On the plus side parts are probably the easiest to come by both used and new. I say go for it you won't have any problems keeping it up with reasonable maintenance. Besides they look so cool!! It's one of the best looking body styles. Gil

Pretty sure Doos didn't have the sealed bearings with grease until the last few years or since the introduction of the SDI and ETEC. Back in 97 the cranks had oil lines to the bearings. Not saying they didn't have crank issues though. I just repaired a 97 formula 500 due to crank bearing issues.

My last sleds before coming to Yamaha were 98/99 skidoo formulas. If you go on the dootalk site and look uner the formula and zx chassis sections you'll find more info/ problems (mostly on triples and mxz 800s') with cranks seals and Isoflex grease for the crank bearing then you can shake a stick at. Other then that they were pretty trouble free. You won't find many other complaints. If it wasn't for needing electric start and reverse for health reasons, I'd have a machz or mxz 800 in a minute they're great sleds. Gil

I always thought they were pretty cool looking. not great for bumpy trails, but find a sled of that era that was good in the bumps lol! for a fun playing around with kind of sled, I say get it
