One of the items I added to my list of preseason checks for my sleds is the condition of the drive chain in the chaincase. With all the power produced by the mighty SRX, it puts a big load on the drive chain, especially if the track is studded. Since these sleds on average are racking up the miles, it's a good idea to remove the chain, inspect it for broken plates and check it for wear. You check the chain for wear by pulling on the chain to remove the tolerance between the plates and the pins then measure the distance across some number of pins. The position of the adjuster bolt will give you an indication of the chains condition, the amount of bolt sticking out of the chaincase decreases with chain wear. The service manual states the wear limit. It sure is cheaper and easier to replace a chain before it fails than out of the trail and run the risk of damaging other parts. I caught a worn out chain by measuring it. I replaced the chain and both sprockets witha set from a low mileage SRX. The chain and sprockets should be replaced as a set.
