I did a search and found several different answers to this question.
I have an 02 Viper that I want to put a Cobra track on. I never plan on running studs. Do I have to remove the protectors or not?

How tall are the lugs?? if it's 1" or more you will need to trim the lugs right over the window are as that right in line with the protectors. I even had to trim my 1" hacksaw so they didn't rub my tunnel protectors (my tunnel strips were 3/4" high) some will say "just let it wear in" but I didn't want the track draging until it wore away, I just didn't think anything good could come from that extra friction.

You will have to trim by track window area or remove protectors.Myself i would trim track( just enough to clear...about 1/4" ) or wear it in.The viper has welded in front protectors which are not hard to remove but if you ever want to go back you'll have to find someone to weld them back in.Tunnel protectors are just riveted in.

If the Cobra is an 1.25 " track then YES you need to remove the protectors. I just put a 1.25 RipSaw in my Viper and there is NO way it would fit with the protectors in there.
They're easy to remove.

The 1.25 will fit just need to trim the lugs at the windows. No effect on track.

Oh they will fit. Like super1c said on a 1.25in track, just trim the track and it will fit. I have two yamahas a 02 vmax and a 03 viper both with 1.25in tracks and they work great. They are also studed too
theres always the 8 tooth driver option.
Remove protectors
Why the hell would anyone trim a brand new track if they "never' plan on running studs. The answer is obvious......remove the heat exchanger protectors. If it were me (although not completely necessary) I'd remove the tunnel protectors too.

The way I see it you have 2 choices. Trim your track (only about 1/4" just where the lug crosses the window) in line with the heat exchanger protectors and tunnel protectors (if it rubs one it'll rub on the other) or you can remove the protectors both tunnel and heat exchanger, which would involve pulling the seat and tank for the tunnel protector rivets and if you want to do it right. Pulling the skid so you can cut the exchanger protectors off. You can drill the rivets on the bottom of the exchanger protectors and yank them back and forth and hope they break off (they're welded to the exchanger on top) where they're welded, but there's no guarantee that's where it will break and not tear a hole in your exchanger. I know my luck and what I would do.
One more note as far as removing protectors, what about resale and what your potential buyer is gonna say / do when he looks under there and see's them gone?
But to each his own.

I'm pretty sure he's going to have to pull the skid to put the new track in, don't you think? He could leave the tunnel protectors......just needs to cut them off the front heat exchanger. 5 minute job tops with a cutting wheel. And by the way, viper heat exchanger protectors are welded directly to the heat exchanger on the top & bottom......there are no rivets on the bottom from the factory.

My bad, I thought he had already installed the track and realized it was rubbing. You're right Matt no big deal cutting of the welds. Mine were gone so I only saw where they were welded at the top. If you do remove the protectors, do the next guy a favor and save them so he doesn't have to find new ones if he wants to go the stud route, like I had to with mine.
