so I had Neil Seymour (9801srx) come by and inspect my crank. while he was here he was trying to troubleshoot the cause of my motor going. as soon as he looked at my heads he noticed something different. there are weird swirl like grooves cut into the dome of the head. I didnt know any different because this was the first srx ive had apart, but he said he has never seen anything like it. i am trying to upload a pic, and hopefully someone can chime in here to tell me whats going on. he also thinks my heads have been cut, which would mean I would need higher octane fuel, which also could explain why 2 of the pistons had melted.

That is wild looking! Never seen anything like it. Peaked my interest that's for sure.

I have never seen anything like that!! Is it an insert that threads into the sparkplug hole? I could see drilling out the plug hole and tapping over sized threads to thread that in, while the spark plug threads into that???

it is definatly not an insert! i just dont know what it is doing, if anything. i think i will get 3 new heads

i wonder is there anyone on here that will chime in that has seen this?? my guess is no!

How is it held in?

They look to be machined swirl grooves on the combustion chambers.

It's probably one of those theory's of more combustion efficiency.

yes it is just cut into the chamber. my worry now is that they cut the heads, and my 91 octane pump gas wasnt enough, and maybe thats why she burned down

That would be a good assumption..

I hope the cylinder was not damaged. If not just get some new pistons, rings, and an unmolested set of 2000-2002 SRX heads

The heads look machined. Curious to know what the amount of squish is.

Can you re-torque one of the heads to the cylinder and measure the squish?

You can do this by bending a piece of solder wire into an "L" shape, inserting in the spark plug hole at the 3 or 9 o'clock position and turning the clutch. Measure that flattened solder piece with a micrometer.

That would tell ya how much compression previous owner had it set up for, as long as no port work was done.

My question is, if its machined into the heads why does it look like some type of
silver solder in between the blades and they overlap/look 3-D. Maybe it the picture

Swirl cut. Supposed to direct the fuel/air mixture towards the plug or something like that. I'll trade you a set of stock heads and pay for shipping both ways :)

Probably doesn't mean anything towards the affect they were trying to reach. It does look like a lot of time was spent on these heads.

i cant retourque them, all my gaskets have been throw in the garbage. on cylinder and one head were destroyed unfortunatley!

ya the picture isnt that great, there is nothing in between the grooves. but there was some time spent on them for sure!

and confused, one of the head is completely mangled, so these would be of no use to you. chances of finding another one is surely slim to none!

hey, maybe ive got some money makers here lol

Check the squish and see if it been ported. I would not blame the heads for burn down other than being cut very tight. Hold on to them, maybe they make good power when running right.

I think you can check the squish without the o-ring gaskets.

I actually re-use mine by putting them in the freezer.
